I feel like on one hand you have to think these people like Bette Midler (and maybe Macy Gray too but she’s a bit younger) are just out of touch and from a different generation but I dunno, on the other hand it’s 2022 and making anti-trans posts on Twitter (or posts that come close to being anti-trans) conversely doesn’t feel like thing you can just brush off as “oh they’re from a different generation and just don’t get it”. Idk. It sucks that someone like her would Tweet that.

 

yeah, i don't know much about her twitter using history, from a quick scroll it looks like she's very outspoken and active on twitter so you'd think she'd be in touch enough to know that what she is saying, even with no ill intent, is going to come across very shitty.

 

there's definitely a possibility that she has no clue what all this terf shit is about but she still has to be careful with her platform

 

Bette Midler has posted in defense of trans people before. So she’s either changed her mind or she’s bought into TERF rhetoric without realizing it. Which means she’s either about to get informed and learn or just sink further down the TERF rabbit hole. I was really surprised when I saw that tweet and hope she realizes the mistake she’s made here

 

For those who don’t know, Mae Martin has an entire bit in their standup special Dope about loving Bette Midler. Definitely a generous response, but it felt like a good thing to share here
