Literally why does it even matter how they present? Listen to the testimony. I've seen this thought process benefit DV perpetrators so often. They'll show up to court and present as poised and respectful (which lol Johnny didn't even do that much) and their victim will present as scattered or escalated because they're in trauma, and the perpetrator is considered more credible. I have seen perpetrators praised for how respectful they're being and their victims lectured even though the judge knows the allegations. It's infuriating And I'm astounded that more aren't commenting on Johnny and his attorneys behavior in court. At some points Johnny barely sounds coherent because he's rambling and it gets a pass. Sometimes it looked painful for him to even get a sentence out
It’s ridiculous to claim you weren’t swayed by the social media campaign and then your credibility determination pretty much mirrors exactly the social media campaign
regardless of what you think happened the fact that people think juries acting based on vibes is a good thing is making me the Joker , the whole point of the legal system is supposed impartiality
Honestly. Idk how people can see this stuff and the stenographer partying with Depp and think any of this is okay. I hope none of them ever have to be in a situation like this. I was reading about why it's speculated that female jurors can be harder on women, and it came down to the fact that we all like to think we'd never react like that or this would never happen to us and we would behave "better." We all like to think we'd be the anomaly or be like Braveheart and give an articulate passionate speech and never have moments of fear or cowardice or anything that makes us human, and it's such bs. Seriously i wish juries had to go thru like trauma informed practice training after they're selected and before the trial starts.
we also still live within social and societal structures that were formed by the patriarchy and are structured through the male point of view. This is going to impact the norms and expectations of responding to domestic abuse. Your everyday “peer” that a jury is going to made up of isn’t going to have read or studied decent feminist theory in order to break those structures and if they had I’m sure Depp’s lawyers would get them removed during jury selection. Couple that with a robust social media campaign that was bolstered by the media and the judge allowing Depp stans to be at court and of course you get this result.
Trying to navigate following along with this and staying informed has been so brutal. It felt like it was getting shoved down everyone’s throats due to the flooding of social media so it was too exhausting to pay any real attention to. But then it’s this huge monumental case regardless of outcome and we have to talk about it but everyone’s too overwhelmed and exhausted. Which I guess is probably part of the intention behind the social media campaign. Just a tremendously shitty situation. And then on a completely different note, the Ezra Miller situation has already become a huge talking point and “proof” of any LGBTQ+ person being a groomer. This is probably the wrong thread but it all feels so incredibly hopeless
yeah always the dilemma of is being traumatized necessary or just killing you and yeah people are definitely using it as an excuse to be transphobic and misgender people and it's a bummer
Someone in the comments mentions they completely cut out River Butcher’s set. He has a really great half hour on YouTube right now that everyone should watch. Also fuck Netflix
I saw someone say it on twitter, that yeah all corporations are evil and that includes streaming/media companies, but no other streaming platform has made transphobia such a part of their identity
Iirc, this also happened with forensic evidence in court cases because of shows like CSI, people wanna act like they can solve the case without any training.
The school isn’t naming their theater after Chappelle anymore (likely) because of the backlash! Dave Chappelle defends 'The Closer,' defers high school naming honor
