There really shouldn't be any difference between Polanski and Allen when it comes to this kind of thing. Polanski's movies are very visibly his considering, you know, his name is on them lol.
I've watched The Pianist in history class, but that's it for me. Don't feel like I'm missing anything with either of them.
people also still trip over themselves to defend and work with allen. you don’t really see that with polanski
I think the Polanski/Allen distinction makes sense, albeit with some heavy qualifiers. Like, in either case, the guy shouldn’t be supported financially, & new projects shouldn’t be supported, & any discussion of their works should acknowledge what we know about these people. Any cop out version of “separate art from artist” still sucks. And, it’s still a great idea in either case to think about what other (particularly traditionally marginalized) creators’ works could be spotlighted & appreciated in their place. But, there’s definitely more of an ability to continue to appreciate work by a monster when that work isn’t so overtly... that person. Which is why, for example, I can still enjoy X2 in spite of Bryan Singer. Woody Allen movies & Brand New’s music, on the other hand, I can’t personally enjoy even in privacy because the shitty person is too intertwined in that work.
Yeah, I agree with that. Honestly I think of RB as much a Mia Farrow movie and Chinatown a Robert Towne movie.
Maybe not to the same extent, but Polanski is still releasing films. His last movie, An Officer and a Spy (2019), won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival! The Pianist was nominated for multiple Oscars back in 2002, well after all his awfulness was well-known. Even over the past decade, he's directed films that have starred Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall, Kate Winslet, Cristoph Waltz, John C. Reilly, Jodie Foster, and Eva Green. Big stars still work for him.
Right, and this is exactly why Polanski should be treated like Allen because then this kind of stuff would happen way less. The collective decision to just sort of hand wave away Polanski's crime is just endlessly astounding to me. Like I get everyone loves Chinatown and Rosemary's Baby but come on. I used to love Annie Hall and Midnight In Paris too, but that hasn't stopped me from cutting them out of my life. Even Allen wasn't fully subject to his current reckoning until like 4 years ago.
On top of being just another way to explain away why people love to give Polanski a pass or find a way to still discuss his work and enjoy it now, the initial argument doesn’t even make sense because his work is absolutely full of stories about sexual abuse of women and it is just as much a part of his art as Allen’s obsession with young women.
Not gonna lie, I wouldn’t of guessed that about Butch considering the shows he’s put out but the more you know...
The Former Teenage Model Woody Allen Allegedly Dated in the 70s Speaks I think we can stop using the word allegedly with this guy
Glad what happened with Michelle was verbal, not okay but not allowed alone with a teenager is a scary phrase
Vanessa Bryant Responds to Evan Rachel Wood ‘Rapist’ Allegation Against Kobe Bryant 1. It is not slanderous to call someone who basically admitted to raping someone a rapist. 2. Rape accusations are not the reason innocent black men go to jail and making this unsubstantiated claim is dangerous and this kind of response imo only adds to Kobe’s negative legacy of victim blaming. The erasure of Kobe’s very real rape and smearing of his victim is what is vile about this situation.
