I truly resents that he still has a platform. Dude was a HORRIBLE person at one point and he still acts like a piece of shit to this day, fuck him.

 

Man, white dudes everywhere are just losing their collective shit over this voice actor situation and the secondhand embarrassment is off the charts. Like it doesn’t affect you at all, you’re just being ridiculous.

 

It’s definitely a situation where it would have been much better to just not have these casting problems in the first place and certainly to have taken the criticism more seriously before now, but I do feel a bit “better” about the shows that have been proactive recently without a huge (and direct) backlash being what it takes to make changes. The bigger question will be whether or not they actually change who is given power in creating shows and making these decisions in the future, because that will be where the real progress happens. Like you said, this is just the first step and it’s happening late enough that they don’t need to be given a ton of praise for doing the minimum.

Over the last couple years, he’s revealed that he is anti-Semitic and likely a Nazi as well. He was in a video wearing an hoodie with the iron cross on it.

 

All these actors and shows suddenly just now realizing it’s bad to have white actors voice characters of color is 10000000% performative and only happening because of the current climate concerning systemic racism in this country. None of them get any credit from me whatsoever for it. Should’ve never happened in the first place.

 

I’m just going off of her more current videos, but it does seem like Jenna Marbles has changed a lot since her early days and regrets a lot of the stuff she used to make.

 

For sure. And I guess I mean more the actors specifically too, like word glad y’all are denouncing white washing and all after you made your paper doing *exactly that*, but it’d be cool to see some of those proceeds and/or royalties going to POC charities or something so we knew you weren’t just looking for a pat on the back

 

Yeah some of these shows have been called out for years and it just wasn’t amplified like it is now. This was always obviously wrong so good it’s happening but shame on those shows for taking so long as well.

 

The Simpsons and Family Guy stand out as doing sooooo little after a ridiculously long time. I know this thread has brought them both up over the years for how routinely they refuse to take criticism seriously.

 

When something that is correctly problematic changes (white actors playing POC) it’s called “performative” and “cashing in on the culture right now”. While not *technically* wrong on the latter, it seems to cheapen the progress if you call it the former. POC playing POC is a good thing. Progress is still progress, even if it is 30 years too late.

 

I have a ‘problem’ with the fact that they are doing the bare minimum which is like “cancelling themselves before they are cancelled” idk. Also from the posts I’ve seen it seems like people aren’t really...apologizing? So much as stating “POC should be played by POC characters” like...yeah...
And like others have said they should honestly be making a donation considering how much money they have made from it. Reparations are real.

Well, I don’t think anyone here would disagree that progress is still progress. Removing white people from spaces that POC can use to represent themselves is obviously a crucial part of this entire process. But the issue is that these actors are simply just washing their hands clean of a situation after the damage has already been done (and will continue to be done as they receive royalties), and the example that that sets. Accountability is about a lot more than feeling the pressure to admit you were wrong and being smart enough to not make the same mistake twice.

A person that genuinely cares they failed to jump the bar doesn’t just set it up for the next person and walk away, they set it up again and leap that shit. We cant be out here rewarding the people that won’t take that extra step, y’know?

 

We all said it’s good that shows are changing white people playing poc characters. What cheapens the progress is acting like the Simpsons had some epiphany and is doing the right thing instead of recognizing that it took an overwhelming moment for them to finally listen to people that had been telling them they were wrong all along.
When the Washington football team changes their racist name are we really going to celebrate progress that in 2030 or whatever they finally dropped a blatantly racist name or will we say shame on you for taking so long?
