That is what is so weird about this. He didn't say something racist or offensive about the protests; he was supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. Mark Wahlberg wasn't some billionaire's kid; he was the youngest of nine kids to divorced working-class parents. He dropped out of high school and was addicted to cocaine by the age of 13. Racism is a learned behavior, and working-class white people are told that the reason they are struggling is black people or Muslims or Mexicans or LGBT people or feminists or socialists but never the rich. He was a product of that environment, like many other people are. The goal should be to get them to change their mindset and behavior, not to criticize them for their behavior 30+ years ago for the crime of...supporting the moral position. As a high school teacher, and one who taught in a school for students that had been expelled from their zone school, I worry about this Old Testament idea of branding teenagers for life, even when they are no longer exhibiting that behavior. It has a very obvious class element too, as these are often the poor who end up in these positions. J.K. Rowling said something transphobic, without apology, and it follows a long history of awful statements from her. Mark Wahlberg was literally saying Black Lives Matter, so to throw his past in his face serves what purpose? Should he go back to being a racist or not use his platform as a celebrity to support a moral cause?
That is an example of one of those things where he clearly means well, he just doesn’t understand the correct language and I doubt has actually thought much about what he even means when saying something silly like “black supremacy.” But his actual point is just to embrace racial solidarity, which is correct
Yeah I'm a little surprised how much backlash there is to that. It's a dumb tweet. I don't think he's "trash".
I think it's because he wasn't on Gabrielle Union's side when she said the work environment at America's Got Talent was toxic
CEO of CrossFit, Reebok and Rogue Fitness are already dropping him and gyms are pulling their affiliations
I’m glad Bravo cut ties, that was absolutely the right thing to do. I do think, having followed the situation pretty closely, Stassi and Kristen’s actions were probably out of dislike for Faith and ignorance, and weren’t racially motivated at least. Awful and insensitive, but I don’t think either of them were being racist on purpose. Glad the show also fired Max and Brett though, that should have happened literally months ago. Fuck those guys.
Please. I have no idea how despite so much constant backlash about all of his shows, nothing ever seems to stick when it comes to Chris Lilley. Also I somehow missed that Netflix gave him a show so recently. Super disappointing. And yeah, Little Britain had some truly appalling stuff on both the original and the US remake. David Walliams also wore that incredibly racist Halloween costume just a few years ago, and if I remember correctly he just made a joke about it and then went on without any repercussions professionally.
Rowling has really gone off the deep end with her new "essay". It's horrific and I refuse to link to it however I'll post this as a warning instead:
