Same, I forgot too. I wonder if he will release a statement about it since it’s resurfaced.

fwiw i don’t think anyone in this thread was using “cancel culture” in a bad faith manner. i just fundamentally am against the usage of that term as a concept bc it’s used like “don’t hold the art responsible for the artist” or whatever by so many bad faith actors

And, it’s not like the only types of people are those who care about accountability & those who created the term “cancel culture.” There are also the people out there who aren’t terminally online, lol, & those people are probably gonna come across that term before they’ve actually engaged & contemplated this whole thing.

I know semantics can be the least attractive topic for some people, lol, but language does matter. (Which, really, everyone here seems to agree with in different ways; the praxis is just different.) This is why people debate so often what is & isn’t “feminist,” “socialist,” “liberal,” “Christian,” “fandom,” “emo,” “pizza,” “sandwich,” etc. Sorry for getting silly at the end of that list, but even the silly can be useful to this conversation in a way, imo.

To look at, for example, “socialist,” think about how that term gets misapplied. And, how it becomes a stumbling block for certain people. And, etc. I’ve argued before that leftists should be aware of this & work accordingly in efforts to create a movement.

I think the same applies here. We gotta understand the term, know when to use it & when not to, be able to use it in conversation, know how to interact w/ others who bring it up, etc.

Yes and I find the conversations fascinating and maybe it’s the communication major in me but could go on all day about language and semantics and nuance

I think that it's reprehensible that this happened.

I agree that I don't speak for all black people when I say I'm deeply offended by something like this.

I don't think Fallon or anyone should lose their platform over this but should make a statement just saying they understand how this is taken by people of color.

Let's be honest, nothing's going to happen to Jimmy. He made the tweet, he's gotten overwhelming support from his fans who love him and appreciate that he "grew from his mistakes" and that's all she wrote.

I thought Sarah Silverman did a good job apologizing for her use of blackface in the past

Why now though? Like did he do something to warrant someone dredging up a 20 year old SNL skit to use against him? Like no mistake, it was very wrong of him to have done it and it’s good he made that apology but the timing of it is just weird to me.

Why not now though? He wore blackface long after everyone should have known better, that warrants dredging it up if he hasn’t appropriately addressed it before.

Ooooh yeah, forgot about that. Pretty sure most of that stuff on that show would ruin his career imo
I agree with you, it’s still a random thing to just bring up but it got him to accept responsibility and apologize so there’s that.

The blame is definitely partially on Fallon but also what about Lorne Michaels and all the behind the scenes crew who just signed off on the skit happening with Jimmy dressed up like that. They are at fault too here.

Doubtful SNL/NBC/Lorne will blanket statement about this kind of thing to avoid drawing more attention to it but it's so easy to find in SNL's history. I immediately think of Bobby Moynihan playing Kim Jong Un and Bill Hader saying there are things he'd rethink doing. SNL is rampant with these types of issues that are barely being attempted at being rectified by having a more diverse cast.
