Check out the Twitter users behind these tweets. All three look like far right conspiracy theory, bad faith types. This gives off James Gunn backlash vibes.
Do TV doctors count as entertainers? Because they have been spewing terrible takes related to Covid-19 lately.
Not that there are any positives to this virus, but it’s nice that the virus and quarantine are exposing all the “It’s not that serious”, “I’m going to go outside and ignore social distancing/quarantining”, “open up our country”, etc. celebrities/musicians and now I know what their true colors are.
Mister Rogers Encouraged Gay Costar Officer Clemmons to Stay in the Closet and Marry a Woman This is disappointing but I’ve heard mr Rogers was a lifelong republican so shouldn’t be surprising.
He gave this advice in the late 60s, out of a pragmatic concern for his friend's career & general wellbeing, & later took that advice back & suggested the opposite. Obviously that was wrong & hurtful advice that he gave, but it feels pretty disingenuous for this to randomly become a story now in 2020.
I mean if Mr. Clemmons is telling the truth he literally thought he had to stay in the closet to keep his job and it does reflect poorly on someone who preached everyone is perfect the way they are. It wasn’t just advice. He’s entitled to tell that story, how is it disingenuous just because it’s 2020?
That story was covered in the Mr. Rogers documentary. The actor was interviewed and had nothing but love and compassion for Fred Rogers and knew at the time it could harm his career.
Disingenuous on the part of the organizations writing this story based on an excerpt of a book, not disingenuous on the part of Clemmons. Like @Jake Gyllenhaal said, this story's been told in the past, w/in the context of Clemmons' love for Rogers. And, w/in the context that Rogers later realized he was wrong & changed his advice. It's bad writing on the part of Yahoo, etc., to pull this excerpt from a recently released memoir & report it as if it's a new revelation, as a gotcha for a beloved, long dead icon, which I guarantee isn't how Clemmons would want it covered.
Yeah I would agree that if Mr Rogers later addressed that story it should have been in the article in some context. It’s all news to me as someone who hasn’t seen the documentary
Also hope I didn't sound like I was calling you disingenuous. Part of my annoyance at the article is the way it paints things for people who don't know the context. I personally couldn't remember the specifics & had to google to remind myself before replying.
