the amount of matty hate compared to the one post i've seen about the all time low guy is crazy lmao (i'm far from a matty mullins gal i fucking hate him actually but i just thought it was jarring)
that sucks too I'm just musing on this annoying vocalist I don't like repeatedly turning up in the favorite bands of my youth
I do like the new version of Take Cover enough and I'm sure the rest of the album will be good aside from the Alex Gaskarth and Matty Mullins songs
Anyone could sing Take Cover and it would slap because it’s a perfect song, but I very much enjoyed Martin and Jason’s vocal dynamic and thought they blended pretty well. Also, I’m just happy they didn’t let MM touch Glory/Us.
The copious amounts of auto tune on Martin’s voice is certainly *a choice* given what an easy song this is to sing and well within his range. Sounds atrocious.
Can someone explain why there are such visceral reactions to some of these guest vocalists? I’m out of the loop
Because they suck. All Time Low are at best creepers and Matty Mullins, while probably not a bad person, is unfortunately fronting Shamberlin.
I can only speak for myself, but I personally can't stand Matty Mullins because at this point I can't stand Memphis May Fire. I used to be a huge fan of them, but now I'm like "I could go my whole life without needing to hear a single song by MMF ever again". This isn't helped by him now being the singer of Anberlin and basically turning them into Anberlin May Fire, and him being a major prick. Alex Gaskarth I dislike for similar reasons but also because of what Penlab said
Friendly reminder that there have been allegations of underage conduct floating around all time low for YEARS.
Really bizarre choices for this. Can’t see myself ever willingly checking these out, save maybe the one with Stephen Christian. Would’ve been cool to get, like…a version of this album done in their new style instead, or an acoustic take, or a live one, instead of this. I love acceptance, and I love this album, and I dig some of the guests!, but I’m not sure who would be jumping to listen to this
Didn't want to be negative but this is exactly how I felt. If they wanted to just do something, perhaps an acoustic version would have been neat. I guess the thinking is it will draw people who haven't heard of them to check them out, which might make sense. Covers that just sound just like the original except with a different singer give me the "ick." No harm really though.
That’s what I figured about gaskarth, but wasn’t sure if there was something else that I haven’t kept up on. That’s kind of a bullshit reason for the other guy though. I have heard his stuff and he is a competent singer. Also the Shamberlin thing is dumb, I love that the other guys get to continue living off the work they’ve been doing for the last 25 years. Stephens on their last album too, which was pretty decent. Im sure I’m in the minority with this take, but, not many who dream of doing that for a living ever get to. they’ve worked their asses off, too, so more power to them. The music is still decent.
You're free to think what you want, and of course they're free to continue however they desire, but the way this era has been presented has been less than ideal. They've been, deliberately or not, misleading about Mullins' role since taking over, originally making it sound like it was strictly for touring when that's clearly not the case anymore if it ever was, nor have they been up front about Stephen's status and if this hiatus he's on is permanent. He's clearly still making music as Anchor & Braille, so it's very odd all around. Since then, they've repackaged EPs with two Mullins songs and called it an album, remade their landmark album with Mullins on vocals, and outright stated they're taking their future musical cues from what Mullins wants to do, which is retreat back to a more commercial sound. It doesn't look great from a fan perspective.
How can you say dude is a competent singer? You've never heard him sing without extreme amounts of vocal processing
He sounds pretty good live. I don't know much about him and don't know or care why people hate him so much. Obviously, Anberlin is such a vocally driven band that it just doesn't feel right so I get that. But he's legitimately not a bad singer sonically. I'd say he sounds like an average singer in the genre though, and Stephen was perhaps top 5 in the genre ever. So it is a far fall. New songs are fine/pretty good to me but they probably should have continued under a different name it's just that marketing/life/income wise that'd be pretty stupid. So I don't blame them. Guys want to make a living too. People don't realize it's working at Home Depot in your mid-30's or being in Anberlin with a new singer, I think that's an easy choice.
