I too once had a family, Cam. Many years ago I lived in Columbia: in love with my Shakira, mimicking her movements from our bedroom and learning the mysterious art of Kamasutra, for Shakira was one of Columbia's finest shadow lovers. Her only rival was a man named Oroko Saki, and they competed in all things, but in nothing more fiercely than for the love of a woman, Tang Shen. Shen's love was only for my master and rather than see her fight Saki for her hand, she persuaded Shakira to flee with me to America. But Saki vowed vengeance. I remember it well, as my master returned home to find her beloved Shen lying on the floor, and then she saw her killer. Saki wasted no words, and during the struggle, my cage was broken. I leapt to Saki's face, biting and clawing, but he threw me to the floor and took one swipe with his Katana, slicing my ear. Then he was gone, and I was alone.

This is random but I get some shit bc I talk to patients even when they're not responsive like letting them know the steps of what I'm doing.

Do you think in those states that people are aware of their surroundings? Noises, smells, stuff like that? I do. When I had an allergic reaction to some drugs they used for my surgery and I was in a medically induced coma, I could tell my family verbatim a lot of the things they said to me. My sister read Lord of the Rings to me and I remember hearing her even though it was dreamlike.

I would want people to treat my family members like they're not just these things that can't respond or hear me. I'm not weird. Sometimes I want to be as callous as some of my co-workers but it just is not in my DNA.
