I think the people who often write those lists of what to do or what not to do, look at hiring in a way that a lot of managers actually don't. They're going to make an evaluation of a candidate in their own way and I think that's why you see such a disconnect between people doing things "wrong" and getting hired. For my company, we don't really care if you write that follow up email, because your work history and qualifications greatly exceed any importance of customs or etiquette in the hiring/interview process.

I barely know you, but my concern would be any significant period(s) of time where you've been unemployed (which could be a completely wrong impression, so if I'm wrong, please accept my apologies! I just know that you've been unemployed while we've been talking on here.). One of my closest friends is unable to get any sort of meaningful job because he has long periods of time where he was unemployed. He would work for a few months. Then be unemployed again. And the cycle would repeat. It's gone on that way for years. I try to tell him, look, take the less than ideal job for the time being but you have to stick with it while you hunt for your ideal job. He doesn't want to take anything that he thinks is beneath him, and he doesn't see the value in having a consistent work history with no gaps in employment. It's not that people don't think that he could do a good job, it's that he's proven himself to be unreliable and his work history shows it. I could rant about him for hours, but I digress.

In short, I really hope that you find a normal job that you'll love as soon as possible! I wish I could be of more help and I hope that you don't take my post in the wrong way. I want to give you positive encouragement and helpful feedback.

Maybe I'm wrong and should stfu. Idk.

Ah fuck I've had a gap in my employment history for almost a year now. But I've been a full time student during that whole time so that makes things okay, right?

    I wouldn't call that a gap if you're a full time student.

I don’t have an employment gap on paper because I do get freelance work. It’s more whether or not people recognize freelancing as a legit way to make money. Most, I’ve learned, don’t.

Yeah. I don’t get nearly enough. But I keep it open on the resume solely to cover the gap thing.

That's smart and it shows you're making an effort. I'm not sure what else they would expect. Anything new on that job you were considering returning to?

I really need to get a job, but the last time I did full time student and work I experienced some serious burnout. Though, I was also working full time and ridiculous hours and I’m not interested in doing that so maybe I could manage part time work.

I didn’t have what a lot of society considers to be an “adult” job at my last place of of employment but I was the hiring manager and one of the most important things to me when hiring someone was whether or not they had questions for me at the end. Most of the applicants just shrugged and said no, which to me said they didn’t give too much thought into getting the job.

When I go through the interview process myself I end with questions including, but not limited to, “what is it about this job that gets you out of bed every day and coming back?,” “are there any challenges that are unique to this particular establishment and what have you done to solve them?,” and then if I’m feeling really confident I’ll close with, “is there anything I’ve said that makes you feel I might not be qualified for this position?” or something to extent. It puts them on the spot and I think a lot of people don’t expect that and in turn, respect it.

As far as people not counting freelance work, that’s ridiculous. Work is work. Also we tend to look at volunteer work as qualifying factors so I don’t see why. The only thing I could imagine is that it’s a generational thing.

Interview is at 3. I’ll accept when/if they offer. Can’t say no with $1.18 in the bank.

tbf, whenever I move on from my current state job, my resume will be 100% truthful. i lied about way back/retail days. in 2012 i got outta retail and into an office, but now i'm on my second state job and third office gig, so i can FINALLY leave all of the retail stuff off my resume in the future. legit don't have a single gap between December 2012 and today.
