he's my favorite author. which collection is it? Infinite Jest is definitely an undertaking and by far the longest book I have ever read but easily the most rewarding. seems trite to say but that guy really did save my life. just wish someone could have done the same thing for him that he did for me.

I wish I was "smart" enough to get through some of his stuff. I end up having to read each paragraph twice and then it just seems pointless and tedious.

I've read through that one a bit but it's admittedly the one I have spent the least amount of time with. think you just inspired me to do to finish it. Consider the Lobster is my favorite book of his essays. I'd suggest reading that if you enjoyed BF&N and don't know where to go next.

the footnotes are just David tho. that's his mind, always going, always unsure of itself. and the footnotes are absolutely essential to IJ at least, and serve as a way to bypass the book being heavily edited.

Haha it definitely took me two years to finally get back into it so I get it. It can be hard to read him talking in detail about professional tennis/commercialism/entertainment/etc., all the while turning it all into some huge metaphor, but man is it pretty impressive at the same time

 

if there is one thing I don't care about that he loves it's tennis haha. so the tennis essays are stuffing for me, at best.
