so this is fun. i'm starting a dungeons and dragons game tonight with 4 friends: two of which have been playing since before puberty and a couple that has never ever played. we all went to high school together, and the male in that couple used to be my very best friend in the world. like, inseparable. he came to school as the new kid in freshman year and walked in wearing a dead kennedys shirt, i told him his hair looked like the tip of a penis, and he laughed and we became best friends.

so, exposition aside, i was also very close with the girl, we dated very briefly in high school before we realized we were basically siblings by that point. she was v cool, but has since found christianity and adopted some of the more problematic idealology that comes with certain denominations. she recently came out as a staunch trump supporter. ok, whatever, i can still enjoy a game night with her because she knows how to handle herself in a social setting.

now, back to mac, a guy i went to basement punk shows with back when he had a duct tape anarchy symbol on his high school agenda. i had always felt comfortable assuming he was pretty progressive: how the fuck else can you have so much fun screaming anti-flag and the like unless you're not at all processing what you're hearing, right?

yesterday i was texting them both about what race and class they wanted to be. mac asked what a tiefling was, i told him it's kind of a halfling. he said "well, i don't approve of any mixed race anything, so that eliminates all those". i responded "a little too edgy for me" and hit him with the JB Smoove gif @Ken introduced me to. he doubled down on the stance and ended it with "I say what I feel"

tl:dr one of my best friends in the world was either a closet racist for the last 13 years or i am just that bad at reading people. both are upsetting and now i feel trapped in this awkward situation. i did, however, tell him there's no place for that stuff at the table.

 

Yeah, they're not really a thing in Texas. But the BBQ here is good enough to make up for it.

I'm from Portsmouth, NH, which is right on the water and also on the border of Maine. Maine lobster has spoiled me for life.

oh, wow! I've been there. That's awesome. Maine lobster is the best. It's not even close. I used to vacation in Maine every summer while growing up. Have you ever stopped at Moody's diner? Spent any time in Acadia?

i mean, josh and robby(the other two) are progressive as all fuck and are two of the most eloquent people i have the pleasure of knowing. if the conversation goes down an alley, they will fuck him right up. just, as dm, my job is to keep vibes good and that is sounding less likely.

That's so cool! Maine is definitely my favorite New England state. I've been to Acadia quite a few times and it's beautiful. Never been to Moody's but I've heard great things.
