Saw this last night and the entire time I was trying to think of who the cinematographer was based on what I was seeing (felt like an idiot when the credits proved it was right under my nose all along—Matthew Libatique). Some of those extended takes on stage really drive home the sense of intimacy between both performers and the audience—in the film crowd, and the theater crowd—which makes the relationship really hum for the entire film. A thoroughly well-made movie in every sense. I understand the buzz, or even the impressive possibility, that it could be the first to sweep the big five categories since The Silence of the Lambs.

In terms of Oscar politics, I think the hype might peak too early and we'll get the inevitable backlash to the acclaim, but we'll see.

I'll scan through the pages at another point as I'm sure this has been mentioned several times, but GOD DAMN...

The three-shot sequence of Ally singing -> exterior shot of Jack hanging -> the purple lights of the L.A. Forum splashing on the trees outside the house is just haunting. Ugh...

Also, for anyone that has tinnitus: can you confirm how accurate/close the ringing sound Jackson had was to actual ringing in the ears?

 

I only get it periodically but I think it was pretty close from what I remember

 

i have it near-constantly and it was definitely way dramatized, but it's also not a same thing for everyone type thing

 

with the soundtrack, gaga now has five #1 albums Born This Way, ARTPOP, Cheek To Cheek and Joanne in the 2010s.

 

I only notice it if I’m in complete silence and while it does suck, it’s not a deafening like in the movie. A bad ear infection is closer to what you hear in the movie.

the tinnitus thing is also different than i’d imagine any of us in the thread could/have experienced considering he plays on stage with loud ass amps pretty regularly haha

 

Went to see this and the power went out like 20min in, very lame

Why Do You Do That is definitely a bop musically. Those lyrics are horrific though.
