After one listen, I like a lot of it. Some tracks I’m not big on, but I can see them growing on me. “TalkTalk” is probably my favorite. “By And Down The River” is a great jam with some standout guitar work.
I really like all the piano on this. I do agree that it’s pretty top-heavy but I’m just happy to hear new music from Maynard that isn’t Puscifer.
I was so conflicted on that song haha, there's elements of it I really like but am not a fan of Maynard's vocals in some parts.
Probably the highlight, even if it's cliche to pick the obvious throwback to their earlier work. Sounds like it would've fit perfectly on MDN. I think "Hourglass" is a pretty cool piece musically, but Maynard goes way out there and that will understandably ruin it for some people. Also not sure WTF he's doing vocally on the re-recorded "By and Down" - that probably annoys me even more.
Overall I'm really enjoying this album, despite a few elements I'm not completely sold on yet. They manage to make an album of largely more downtempo compositions be actually quite compelling for the most part... like @waking season mentioned, the piano on here is really gorgeous, and it's cool how prominent that instrument is throughout. I actually think some of the songs that are the most different from this band's old wheelhouse are some of the best.
Never listened to Disillusioned upon its release, but I remeber it getting a lukewarm reaction. I’m in awe of how beautiful it is.
I liked the singles a decent amount, but I think hearing them in context of the full album is already making me like them more.
Disillusioned is great and grew on me quickly after they dropped the single. Still love The Doomed too.
Man, I'm loving By & Down...I had listened to it a few times beforehand, but within the context of the album I'm loving it. Billy's guitar work is really splendid here.
I had this irrational feeling that today when the new APC went up that Tool records would be streaming as well. Shockingly, I was wrong
Can't wait to get my indie exclusive of this pig, go home, 4/20 the fuck out of my evening and play this thing. I love it after one listen.
