Will spoiler stuff since it’s a weird week watch time wise

I had completely forgotten that Steffon turns cloak. I remembered Raymond getting knighted to fight for Dunk, I forgot that him and Steffon were on opposite sides. What a dick.

Loved the opening scene with Baelor and and Dunk and “how good a knight are you”. Also love seeing Dunk lose his carefulness around Baelor and speak out in ways you aren’t supposed to speak out against a prince. Dunk the lunk.

Love Ser Robyn the psycho being on Dunk’s side. And of course Lyonel and his stag helm. I don’t know who the other guy is in their cadre, gonna have to look that up.

the music kicking in as Baelor rides out was so damn good. and I love how visibly annoyed Maekar is with him, and with everything in general. I feel like they really nailed Maekar in this series. Hes prickly and an asshole, but not mad or evil.

    Can’t wait for next week.

Honestly it’s absolutely insane that Aerion wouldn’t withdraw his claim as soon as Baelor joined Dunk’s side. Like if I was his dad I’d be like “The last thing that is going to happen here is you risking the life of the first in line to the throne over this dumb petty bullshit”

Nah he’s so far down the line of succession that I don’t think any reasonable person would actually think that he and his kids have any realistic shot at it. There’s like six guys between him and Baelor

so the kings guard has to fight to the death against the next in line to the throne? that seems like a conflict of their oath.
very good episode, now I wish the next one was on Sunday instead of having to wait over a week

this idea specifically is something I do actually remember from the book. Without spoiling anything I’ll just say that yes the contestants are aware of that haha. I’m interested to see if it’s directly addressed out loud in the show. I can’t remember if anyone says anything about it out loud or if it was just Dunk’s inner thoughts. If not I’ll happily post what I remember about it after the episode next week airs.

I’m assuming either (1) they really can’t hurt him and he uses that to his advantage, or (2) taking the side of the accused could legally be seen as Baelor taking the side of the “aggressor” and thus allow the kingsguard to “defend” themselves against him, since even though Dunk is the accused, he is the one demanding the trial by combat. Like that they wouldn’t be allowed to join Dunk’s side against a Targaryen, but if a Targaryen “turns” on his family then they’re fair game in the same way that an actual traitor would be

What I don’t get and what seems like a little plothole, is why Aerion didn’t instead just have a single kingsguard step in as his champion in a one-on-one. In the two(?) trials by combat that we see in the original series, both involve champions fighting for both sides. The actual accuser/accused never do the fighting. So it’s not like it would be out of the norm for Aerion to do that

edit: forgot that The Hound also does a trial by combat against Beric Dondarrian. So I guess that’s 1/3 fights where the actual people involved in the dispute fight

Idk perhaps A sees that more as showing weakness where’s with the Trial of the Seven he has better odds and will participate still.

I think with Tyrion it’s expected he gets a champion because he’s a dwarf who obviously couldn’t fight a knight himself, but with Aerion it would seriously soil his reputation (as a man and crown prince) if he was challenged to a trial by combat and hid behind someone else, especially as someone who fancies himself a warrior and wants to be respected and feared. Going for the trial by 7 lets him preserve that pride without necessarily having to face Dunk by himself or himself at all. And I’m sure after experiencing Dunk’s strength, he would prefer that lol

I also don’t think Maekar would ever let him accept a trial by combat and let someone else stand in for him. We saw the way he reacted haha

He also probably didn't expect Dunk to be able to find 6 other people in one night willing to fight against the royal family
