yeah, they’re def a vibe band although I do think each album has some extreme highlights that kinda transcend that descriptor (not to say it’s a “bad” or inferior thing or something but you know). for me the opening duo on Prefrontal Cortex is a p clear example of that, imo nothing else on the record really even comes close to the sheer strength of those tracks, but it’s all still v enjoyable ride. I haven’t quite determined what those tracks are on this record yet. also, as a side note, kinda coming around to the idea that Ambiversion (either version, really) is their best song
^ Completely agree. Ambiversion is one of those songs that hits you with all sorts of feel-good...goodness? (I am so smrt!) and nostalgia, one of my favorite songs by them, and one of my favorite songs ever. Though all of their music pretty much does
YES! For me I also find what makes them transcend beyond just being “a vibe” is their emotional exploration of nostalgia and escapism. A lot of their lyrical work gives off this vaguely stoic vibe, touching on the futility of aging or consumerism/corporatism, living as a shell, resorting to the imagination. The lyrics all throughout Have You Seen basically describe a dissociation from reality, all articulated in a way that seems bright but there’s a darkness revealed underneath (“Where did I go?” from Moving in Slow). And the music - at least for me - tonally matches those themes of sleepiness and wanting to escape back into your adolescent summer, or the simple pleasures of greasy food. plus they jam so good
to be fair, I have to say I’ve far from gone thru a deep dive into their lyrics; I will have to actually make a point to read them next run through instead of straining my ears to make them out while listening on my pizza delivery runs lol
It’s still early for me to say much about the new one (though I did notice some extended metaphors in this album- like the fish analogy from “Swimming” into “Water Cycle”) but their earlier work has some great thought provoking lyrics. YAOMM feels more sincere or buys more fully into its escapism/nostalgia
To me I kinda think of these guys as a "guitar" band too, like that's my straight-up favorite thing on all their records. Just love all those riffs, the noodling, the reverb, etc.
I am immensely glad I stumbled on this album and Meet Me @ The Altar's EP because my god I needed the good vibes from both lmao
just played You're Always On My Mind for the first time and now I'm just looping "Ambiversion" and "Learning Curves" over and over lmao goddamn these songs
Idk if anyone else was hoping for merch but they made a comment on their instagram post saying it's coming next week
I want to love this, and by all accounts I should as a huge Turnover fan, but man, this really bored me.
excellent post - this is what makes this band special to me really enjoying the new album but need to spend more time with it
Highlights for me are Kitchen Concert, Water Cycle, Writing Utensils, Beat Up Shoes but really enjoying the whole record
