Hell, it’s not a perfect movie, and it has issues, but Katherine Bigelow showcased staggering directorial talent in Detroit.
The fact that a film like The Shape of Water is a serious awards contender this year is astounding. Still can't get over it.
It's one of those times where the film is definitely a top 10 of the year for me, although it probably isn't my #1, but I'd still be happy if it wins everything it's eventually nominated for, including Picture/Screenplay/Director/Actress. Like in 2007, There Will Be Blood was the best film but the fact that No Country For Old Men beat it in all the major categories they were both in was ok because I loved that movie too.
I’m honestly surprised Call Me By Your Name has received award recognition. It’s honestly too good, too arthouse for something like the Globes, maybe even the Oscars. Or maybe I’m salty cause where was this love for A Bigger Splash
That last lingering shot in Call Me By Your Name was more powerful than the entirety of most any other film I saw in 2017
