  1. Once I realized he was closing the show I said “I hope he doesn’t do any of that shitty 80s Billy Joel doo wop” to my wife. She did not get the reference.

Taylor taking album of the year is proof that these awards shows are an absolute joke

To me, it sucks that Olivia didn’t get any awards when she had the best album out of all of the nominees by far. But she’s still young and I feel like her time will come to sweep the categories away from everybody down the line.

I must have totally missed that Zach Bryan/Kacey won a Grammy earlier in the day for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

    Amazing song. Good for them

I mean, she shouldn't have won regardless, but true.

You can say SZA’s album had flaws, or it was too long, or whatever other issue you feel, but when the Grammys have a history of snubbing black women from AOTY, putting the hip hop categories in the pre telecast, etc. it’s just such a bad look.

Another bad look is giving Dave Chappelle Best Comedy Album. I think they even gave Louis CK a Grammy a couple of years back. Talk about tone deaf.

Their comedy award recipients are routinely awful.

She will sweep in a decade with her most mediocre album.

Y’all mad/surprised when someone in this very thread told you exactly what was going to happen here months ago.

it was over when noah made the special announcement that "if taylor wins tonight winkwinkwinkwink" at the beginning of the show.

it is what it is. I thought it was a mostly fine show with some really good performances.

She was never, ever losing that award. The race was over half a year ago. Like, I get that Midnights isn’t most people’s favorite Taylor album, but it’s the springboard for the biggest year any pop star has had maybe ever. If there had been an obvious second-place spoiler, I’d get the outrage more, but SZA wasn’t that, no matter how much you wanted her to be, and most of the category was other artists not doing their best work. Advantage, Midnights.

(I might have voted for GUTS if I’d had a ballot, but I had a sinking feeling Olivia wouldn’t win anything tonight, just based on what happened with SOUR. She should have won Song of the Year.)

Midnights and Guts were the only nominated albums I listened to so I guess if it’s between those two I would pick Midnights, but the Grammies only nominate r&b and pop albums the majority of the time anyways. It’s a glorified popularity contest for AOTY.

    hmmm

Amuses me watching Best Metal Performance always go to whichever massive legacy act happened to release music that year.

Mind you, the Spiritbox track that people were fanatically offering up as an alternative is dreadful by-the-numbers modern metalcore.

Yep. The only surprise wins I remember from the metal category was when August Burns Red won a couple times. Surprised the grammy committee even knew about ABR.

I mean, Jay z told us in his speech earlier in the night. Black artists struggle to get the big categories. Sad.

It was bizarre for hip hop to not have a single televised award. I’d would’ve sacrificed 1-2 performances to have a hip hop, alt/rock, and electronic award presented on air.

Also, has the Grammys always skewed so heavily to mainstream pop? Looking back, it seems the big categories have been very pop heavy the last 10yrs or so, what changed around 2010 that caused this shift?

Yep, all you need to do is give a single award for those categories TV time.

Better than when they were obsessed with legacy acts like Steely Dan haha

But yeah it seems to hate awarding music

It’s insane to me that Lana didn’t win a single category. She absolutely deserved at least Song of the Year for A&W or one of the smaller categories.

I think Midnights is a boring pick, but whatever good for Taylor. I’m dreading the backlash she’s gonna get when this next album drops though.

Happy for Miley, Paramore, boygenius, SZA, Jack.
