Glad to see Godzilla get a nom for visual effects and The Boy and the Heron get a nom for animated film
Some initial thoughts - Honestly a very strong BP lineup. The only one i didnt like was American Fiction - Gerwig should have been in for director - Robbie getting snubbed for best actress is nuts (especially when Ferrera is in for supporting?) Annette Benning is great but really, Nyad is a movie that does not exist. - Asteroid City & The Iron Claw getting shut out is a real bummer. - Indy in for best score like I get they want to celebrate John Williams again while they still can but c'mon Joe Hisashi & Daniel Pemperton deserved that slot - Killers of the Flower Moon not in for adapted screenplay is pretty wild. Zone of Interest is an incredible directing achievement but what's special with that movie i don't think is necessarily on the page - No Charles Melton/Julianne Moore in supporting categories. They screwed up there. - Wes Anderson might get his first oscar for best short film! - Godzilla Minus One in for visual effects - very cool - GET FUCKED SALTBURN!!!! HELL YEA Overall, pretty good noms this year tho!
May December was arguably the most critically acclaimed film of the year and so much ink was spilled praising the work of the three leads. The Oscars are a little better than they were in the Miramax days but did you really have to give those nominations to stuff like Maestro and something called Nyad that no one has ever seen?
No. Just not the movie I would call out as the one that sticks out where May December should have been. Nyad's noms are the classic work of old people brain however
Maestro is a bad movie, I am absolutely confounded by its fans. Not for me. May December wasn’t tracking to get much love, but no noms for the three leads is bad, I’ll echo above it seems like Nyad took these, a shame. International Feature is a total mess. No Fallen Leaves or The Taste of Things is a travesty. Saw Society of the Snow the other day, not good! No Greta or Margot, but America is just bizarre No Killers of the Flower Moon in adapted feels bad too. The best group of Best Picture noms in some time.
