saw this a few days ago, i think it's good and cage is pretty amazing but it whiffs the ending and maybe the last act too
Hard agree on loving the movie til the last act. It's not awful. It just has so much potential to be amazing and sort of fizzles.
To clarify, I didn't think it was bad. It just felt like it was building to something really profound or unsettling. And it didn't for me.
This was okay. The nods to Being John Malkovich threaten to become overwhelming but it really misses a sense of purpose overall. Equating "cancel culture" (sexual assault victims speaking out and men facing consequences) with hysterical college students getting mad about their imagination felt like a FOX News bit.
That’s were it lost me as well. That whole section felt like it was trying to have its cake and eat it too. It wants you to feel bad for Nic Cage for being ostracized despite not doing anything but then also look at his reactions to that as childish and fueled by insecurity. The problem is it makes the general public seem so unreasonable that his anger towards everyone feels justified and the intent is lost.
Yeah, the cancel culture stuff is insane and I went into this having no idea it would go there, but as a whole the movie was really endearing and sporadically very funny imo. Looked great.
