https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a3585000156_16.jpg What began as a singular passion project unexpectedly grew into a uniquely collaborative record for Current Joys. Rattigan explains, “I’ve set out to make collaborative records before, but they often end up totally me, with just a couple exceptions. But then this record gave me the opportunity to be extremely collaborative, to let other people write instrumental tracks, sending links around for people to mess with and weigh in on. I sat down to do credits and realized here were all these people and styles and they all came together and worked.” Notably, Lil Yachty, Lily West (Lala Lala), Slow Hollows & more also feature on the record.
I find the lo fi drum machine loop stuff a lot more interesting than the full band stuff he's been doing previously, so I dig the single. A lot of stuff in that write up points to this being a mess though, very curious to hear the whole thing.
I like a few songs but some are just terrible. Lyrically pretty cringey too. He says he’s finishing up a folk album that he’s releasing next that I’m interested in
"Moon Sickness" kinda reminds me of John Nolan/Straylight Run, and "I feel truth inside of u" of David Bazan. Overall though, this is yikes. Not really into any of the screaming here, and the lyrics might as well be placeholder lyrics most of the time. Kinda sounds like he's been digging Strange Ranger lately.
so I saw a lot of these songs live tonight (among others) and they are so much better in a live setting. the trap beats over certain parts, the screaming - it all translates well live imo. ‘a different age’ will never not hit
