I really enjoyed the Little Big Town album, but it wasn't really "special" and no Chicks is a travesty and a glaring omission. It actually makes... no sense to me at all how it could not be on there.
If I was The Weeknd I would literally boycott the Grammys from now on like Frank Ocean after this blatant disrespect, holy shit. He literally deserved AOTY, and not even a nom for literally the biggest song of the year? It feels like they intentionally left him out, did he piss someone off at some point? Rap noms are actually good though, I'm shocked Freddie got nominated but I really hope he wins. He's probably gonna have his phone out roasting people while he's there lol. Really sad about no Mac but I guess it's not really a rap album
I want Jacob Collier to win AOTY just so everyone is like 'who?!'. He's a deserving nom, album absolutely shreds. Sad that Brittany Howard and Fiona didn't make the cut.
They sometimes skip the super obvious pick and then nominate a bunch of similar albums (often, similar albums that are not as good). This is one such case. And I like those country album noms, mostly, but none of those albums are as good as Gaslighter.
For the record, I love that album and it's definitely my second favorite nominee here. But just in terms of people losing their shit, that one winning would probably generate the most self-righteous overreactions.
I'm totally expecting Coldplay to be performing Trouble in Town. And honestly I'd love for the album to win because it's great and kinda flew under the radar. But it's most likely going to folklore.
I don't know why any artists take this show seriously, or act like they are owed/entitled to anything. No awards show in history has a more random, scattered history of things they've chosen to honor or not honor. I'm sure getting passed over is disappointing, but since there is basically no way to predict what the Grammys are going to do in any given year, it's also just a massive shrug.
It impacts their future budgets and what kind of tours they can go on and venues they can fill it’s still an important event in the industry whether we like it or not
With all due respect, I think this is an insane stance when we're talking about a certain level of artist. The Weeknd is literally playing the Superbowl. I don't think missing the Grammy nomination is going to hurt his "future budgets" or his "funding in Canada." I'd agree that getting a Grammy nomination can be a game-changer for a lesser known or up-and-coming artist, but those artists are not the ones acting like they are "owed" something by the institution.
Idk, to me, this is just an extension of the entitlement that many major pop artists have developed in regards to music criticism. I don't think we should give any of them a pass for being arrogant dweebs.
I dunno, if I put in the work and the energy in an album era that he has and got no recognition from the main organization that awards such work, I would probably be at least a little pissed. Especially when albums that have made less waves are getting nominated (e.g. Coldplay). I can see the frustration.
I don’t think it’s insane at all - The Weeknd put it in an insane amount of work and vision into his era and he is more than allowed to be pissed that he wasn’t recognized by an industry of his peers black artists are owed everything and anything from an industry that has exploited them for decades
I also think we should allow him to vent his frustrations and not be quick to judge. I mean this was something he was clearly aiming for and to not get anything out of it...he has a right to say how he feels and I think it's healthy for him to let out those feelings.
He has the biggest chart hit of the year if a white artist had the biggest charting hit of the year they would have been nominated in all 3 major categories
I also didn’t do any research on this so I would love some data to prove me wrong too - I’ll look into it more as well once I’m on my computer
