Round one is here. 62 years of albums with 2 convenient ties. What album will come out on top? NOTICE: PLEASE DO NOT VOTE UNLESS YOU'VE HEARD BOTH ALBUMS. STOP DOING THIS SHIT. For this matchup, we start with: (12) The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound vs. (53) Etta James - At Last
feels wrong to vote against Etta here, i just have more of an emotional connection to the gaslight album.
Have not listened to the Etta album, so I'll be abstaining and listening to that today! I wish there was a way to see current poll results without voting edit: I'm dumb
Never understood the hype for the ‘59 sound after listening to it so I have to side with the more timeless classic imo.
Brian himself would probably vote for Etta James, haha. But I’m going with The ‘59 Sound, one of my favorite albums of all time, and an album I’ve talked about at great length between podcasts and writing.
"At Last" is one of the greatest songs of all time, but The '59 Sound is formative for me. A very important segment of my life is soundtracked by it.
Etta takes this for me, it's my favorite TGA album but even my favorite TGA album is just an alright album overall
Obviously Etta is a classic and would likely have won with a larger, more varied group of voters, but I'm siding with '59 Sound without any remorse.
I don’t feel a super strong way about either but I do give the edge to Etta cus Gaslight has never fully clicked with me and I prefer Handwritten anyway
why criticize the voting body for not being varied when you're voting in line with the majority of the voters haha
Good point lol I guess I was just thinking about which one would have won if there was more 50+ year old voters. Wasn’t intended as criticism.
At Last! Do I love The '59 Sound? Yeah, it was definitely a formative album for me. But At Last! is timeless and I have a deep appreciation for jazz standards. Both are great albums. Seems odd to pair these two against each other when 1) they don't sound very similar and 2) we know that Brian would say that Etta is at least a minor influence on his writing.
i mean i kind of agree with it. i don’t think you should vote unless you’ve heard both, but going through the motions to listen to one of the albums once, just to justify voting for the other is also kind of lame, but then we’re verging into “you must listen to these albums ten hours each” territory which also sucks
Also, you now have heard and experienced a new piece of art. Even if you don’t end up enjoying it, that is a valuable thing to have done.
