Yeah this year is weird for me.... Had PJ #1 that year, and saw them live 3 times on that tour, so I hold that album in higher regard just out of nostalgia for that long weekend. I think I also struggled with just trying to listen to TOO MUCH music. Most anything from below 10 through my honorable mentions is just stuff I "like", but don't really return to a lot.
Oh fuck, Blurred Lines was murdering the airwaves everywhere in 2013. Still a great year though. 1. The Wonder Years - The Greatest Generation 2. Justin Timberlake - The 20/20 Experience Pt 1 3. An interesting year that continues to shift us into the kind of music I think of when I think "the 2010s." I graduated high school this year so these albums definitely hold a special place in my heart. I mean, what a stacked year. This will definitely be my biggest post so far. Sorry lol, does anyone actually read all of these? 1. The 1975 - The 1975 Honestly surprised I'm giving this album the #1 spot. It is probably my 3rd favorite 1975 album, but the strongest songs here simply cannot be denied. I remember trying to convince everyone I knew that this band was great, but it definitely took a few more years and albums before folks got caught up. 2. Bad Religion - True North Most bands never make an album as strong or immediate as this, but Bad Religion managed to do it over 30 years into their career. One of my favorites of theirs, it really brings aggression that I feel had been missing since at least the 90s. 3. Queens of the Stone Age - Like Clockwork My favorite Queens album most days, this is the only one I think does not have filler or any superfluous minutes in the runtime. The moodier parts are sufficiently moody and the rockin' parts are sufficiently rockin'. Plus, "Smooth Sailing" gives us a glimpse into where they'd head on the next album. Honorable Mentions Paramore - Paramore The first Paramore album to really click with me. Loved the singles and was pleasantly surprised by the more accessible direction they moved here. Fall Out Boy - Save Rock and Roll I was in my high school library surfing the internet alone when AP.net posted the music video for "My Songs Know..." and I got SO excited, but no one was around to tell. This might've been the day I finally started an AP.net account so I could share in the excitement. I think this album is one of their strongest, even if it absolutely sounds like a product of its time now. Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City Man, what a great album. Just an absolute level up on nearly every level. I still get chills when I hear "Step." Pearl Jam - Lightning Bolt The last "classic" Pearl Jam album, IMO. Also my first new one as a fan and I honestly really love it. Alkaline Trio - My Shame Is True & Broken Wing EP A sorta weak Alk3 EP that would be way stronger if they cut the 4 weakest tracks from the album and put on the entire Broken Wing EP. At this point in their career I don't know why they weren't including Dan as much. We're not in the Crimson era boys, you don't need to project only having one lead singer. Relient K - Collapsible Lung My girlfriend at the time really fucking loved this album, so I definitely gave it more chances than I otherwise would've. I think there are maybe 2-3 absolutely terrible songs on here but that the rest is either OK to pretty good. Glad the next album was way better though. Cartel - Collider I wasn't around for Chroma, so this is my favorite Cartel album. Easily their most consistent, IMO. The Strokes - Comedown Machine I wasn't aware of any of The Strokes' inner difficulties, so to me this is just another pretty solid album from them! Jimmy Eat World - Damage This album... hmm. I was considering breaking up with the aforementioned girlfriend when this album was released, so I listened to it once and didn't like seeing myself reflected in the lyrics. Didn't really click with me until after the breakup. I think there's some great tracks on here, but no denying that it is one of the band's weaker albums. The Swellers - The Light Under Closed Doors The band's official swan song (I don't count the single track they reunited for to contribute to a Flint, MI water compilation). And it's a bummer, because this is a lean, mean hook machine. Bowling For Soup - Lunch. Drunk. Love. Legitimately one of the most consistent Bowling For Soup albums. There are some power pop gems on here. Cage the Elephant - Melophobia The best Cage the Elephant one and the last one I give a shit about. This album perfectly marries their experimentation and hooks and they'd completely ditch it after this in favor of a straightforward alternative sound. Butch Walker - Peachtree Battle EP What I wouldn't give to hear what the rest of this album would've been! Butch finally embraced some current production techniques for his own music and the result is excellent, but too short. Frank Turner - Tape Deck Heart One of Frank's best and certainly his best-sounding. The first couple tracks are absolute heaters and the second half makes you want to crawl into a hole and die. Panic! At the Disco - Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die At one point, this was my favorite Panic! album. I really admired Brendon going for something completely different. Now, I wish there were more bridges and a dash more substance, but wow Butch Walker was on an absolute tear at this point. The Lonely Island - The Wack Album I believe this was their first album to actually be crafted as an "album," and IMO, it shows. Lots of weird and great album cuts and also a bunch of filler. But there's a great 12-track comedy album in here. Bo Burnham - what. I never quite understood the hype for this one, but I do like it. This is when Bo went full theater kid and hit Netflix and everyone fell in love with him. I'm a hipster Bo fan and I think because this one went huge I didn't love it as much as everyone else. I like it now, but the songs are not nearly as immediate as his prior (and future) work. Others Daft Punk - Random Access Memories My friends made me listen to this album a lot. Pretty good! Kanye West - Yeezus Love the first couple tracks, don't care for the rest. Justin Timberlake - The 20/20 Experience Pt. 1 Never could really sit through the full album and Pt. 2 never grabbed me, but the songs that rule on here definitely rule. Anarbor - Burnout 3-4 great power pop singles and a ton of filler. Bad Religion - Christmas Songs A fun novelty release that I still spin at least once a year. Great production too. HAIM - Days Are Gone Infectious pop music with a little bit of classic rock stank thrown in. Dave Hause - Devour Some Dave all-timers on this album, but I wouldn't buy into the full albums for a few years yet. Hellogoodbye - Everything Is Debatable A disappointment after the 2nd album, I like this one more now than I did then. Portugal. The Man - Evil Friends Remember that Apple commercial with "Your mama's got nothing on me? Your daddy's got nothing on me?" This album was absolutely inescapable this year. The Dangerous Summer - Golden Record Some of their best songs on here. Some of their worst. @Craig Manning will write about this one better than I ever could. Tegan & Sara - Heartthrob An album I never actively reach for anymore, but when I hear any of the songs, I remember listening to this with my girlfriend and how the hotel we stayed in for a week in D.C. had this entire album on repeat in the lobby. You, Me, & Everyone We Know - I Wish More People Gave a Shit EP Wanna get bummed out while singing along? Listen to this! Lorde - Pure Heroine Imagine releasing a debut even half this good. Less Than Jake - See the Light Low key one of my fav LTJ albums. This one really utilizes their pop sensibilities. Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap For some fans, this is where the story starts and ends. For me, I've got another half-album I like, but Chance definitely won't return to the quality of this album.

Agreed on this take - and I struggled ranking it. I remember in 2013, only really liking "Chocolate" at first, but honestly I just don't think I really even gave the full album a chance until .... 2014 or 2015. Looking at my Top 10, I can say I probably have returned to that album much more than some of the others, but yeah like you said, it didn't catch on right away at all for me.
I love that album and "Sex" is still one of my favourite songs by them but other than that I rarely ever return to it now and it's definitely my least favourite release by them.
What is Infinity Crush and what do they sound like? Sex, Robbers, The City, Girls, and Menswear are the ones that hold up the most for me!
2013 had some classics for me, but overall a fairly slow year and some very big let downs from a few bands that previously put out their best work (yes I'm looking at you Transit and A Loss For Words): Balance & Composure - The Things We Think We're Missing Queens of the Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork Superheaven - Jar ____________________________________________________________ Moving Mountains - Moving Mountains A Great Big Pile of Leaves - You're Always On My Mind Kevin Devine & The Goddamn Band - Bubblegum Citizen - Youth My Bloody Valentine - m b v Turnover - Magnolia The Wonder Years - The Greatest Generation Kurt Vile - Wakin on a Pretty Daze Polar Bear Club -Death Chorus (I know it gets hate for the vocals but I love this record)
