1) The Weeknd - House of Balloons 2) Beach Boys - The Smile Sessions (prob shouldn’t count but I don’t care) 3) Radiohead - The King of Limbs HM: Wu Lyf - Go Tell Fire to the Mountain This has the two songs that most defined my 20s. Far too short a career, did get to see their last show though. Kendrick Lamar - section.80 Wilco - The Whole Love Sneaky great Wilco album, far and away their best post AGIB release Real Estate - Days Cymbals Eat Guitars - Lenses Alien has my favorite two Cymbals songs in Definite Darkness and Another Tunguska Mediocre year in comparison to 2010 imo though I think HoB is really strong.
I remember the week that Cake was #1 on the charts, because Billboard hadn't implemented streaming into album sales yet and the band had the lowest-selling #1 album of all time: https://www.billboard.com/music/mus...lling-no-1-album-in-soundscan-history-473580/
asides: I absolutely loathe Helplessness Blues outside of 2-3 songs Never got into BI, BI. I recognize it is good but I’m no fan of JV’s gradual descent into soundscape focus I got to see the last Buffalo Springfield show ever in 2011, one of the musical highlights of my life and definitely my favorite time I’ve seen Neil
Cole World was a weird debut, it was old the record industry trying to launch a new record industry guy
Don't have time to think about it deeply... 1. Dan Andriano In The Emergency Room As a huge Dan fan with his Alk3 work, and seeing him solo acoustic a few times, I was super pumped for this album and it didn't disappoint. Dan is great as a singer songwriter and I wish his more recent albums would go back to that style tbh. But I know he has said multiple times he hates playing on a stage alone and prefers to have a band so. But this album is great and there's only a couple on here I couldn't really get into. What was cool was hearing a song I ahd heard him play years before solo acoustic, Say Say Say, and having a completed album version of it. There's a few others out there that he's played solo that I hope make it to recordings some day, a couple of htem have now with Alkaline Trio (Little Help and Smokestack) 2. Taking Back Sunday-S/T As an album, this was actually kind of a disappointment. It just seems a little all over the place as these guys tried to get reacquainted with each other and their song writing styles. That led to a final product that was disjointed and uneven. However, some of the songs themselves individually on here are great or at least have great moments. This Is All Now is a top tier TBS song. Definitely wish some of the tracks on the final track listing were replaced by some of the b-sides we go. Macky Sasser and You Should Have Waited definitely should have been finished and on the album IMO.
the wye oak album won't get a ton of votes but it's one of the most interesting guitar rock albums of the decade and would have won pretty much any other year for me

Holy shit this year was so stacked, gonna put together my list later. Hilarious that both Cake and The Decemberists had #1 albums (which I both liked/loved but was more emblematic of having not as many superstar releases in those weeks).
I wanted to put Take Care as my #1, but I remembered how bloated the back half is. The first half is untouchable.
How many of these do you tend to check out each week? Or do they just go onto a long list for future listening?
Little of both - I am cataloguing by year with Spotify playlists. So each week I add these and more based on the recommedations throughout the thread and treat each playlist as a catch-all of sorts. I'll scroll through the playlists based on my mood and listen accordingly. Lately each week I probably get to 5-7 of those. Kinda glad that this will be over in 10 weeks because holy shit I have a lonnnnnnng long list still to get to.
1. Manchester Orchestra - Simple Math 2. Bon Iver - Bon Iver, Bon Iver 3. The Wonder Years - Suburbia 4. Joyce Manor - Joyce Manor 5. WU LYF - Go Tell Fire To The Mountain 6. Transit - Listen & Forgive 7. Los Campesinos! - Hello Sadness 8. Fucked Up - David Comes To Life 9. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues 10. Laura Stevenson - Sit/ Resit Simple Math was the big break up album of a long-term relationship I was in when I was a doe eyed idiot 19 year old. I love how huge songs like the title track, Leave It Alone, and Pale Black Eye sound, the highly confessional but oddly relatable lyrics, and the Built To Spill twangy influence, (especially on Leaky Breaks). It's a *chefs kiss* of an album. BI, BI is probably amongst the prettiest albums of the decade. A lush, scenic album, which has some of my favourite Bon Iver songs, (Michicant, Perth, Beth/Rest). The first two Wonder Years records were the soundtrack to my years at uni, with Suburbia remaining as one of my favourite pop-punk albums of all time. Not all of the music coming out of that wave of pop-punk was incredible, but Suburbia fucking rules. I love the Ginsberg structural and lyrical influence, I love the urgency, I don't think Dans ever sounded better than on this record. It's just a great time from to start to finish. 2011 also had Trophy Scars' Never Born, Never Dead, which is my favourite EP of all time.
1. Charlie Simpson - Young Pilgrim 2. La Dispute - Wildlife 3. Moving Mountains - Waves Kinda weak year for me in comparison to the 2000's. I still really love my top three but the rest don't do quite as much for me. Honourable Mentions: 4. Frank Turner - England Keep My Bones 5. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues 6. Panic! at the Disco - Vices & Virtues 7. Bon Iver - Bon Iver, Bon Iver 8. Frank Ocean - Nostalgia, Ultra. 9. The Hotel Year - It Never Goes Out 10. Gotye - Making Mirrors 11. Farewell Continental - ¡Hey, Hey Pioneers! 12. Drake - Take Care 13. The Weeknd - House of Balloons 14. Mansions - Dig Up the Dead 15. M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming 16. Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto 17. The Dangerous Summer - War Paint 18. Blink-182 - Neighbourhoods 19. Adele - 21 20. The Rosebuds - Loud Planes Fly Low 21. Radiohead - The King of Limbs 22. Deas Vail - Deas Vail 23. Thursday - No Devolución 24. Dance Gavin Dance - Downtown Battle Mountain II 25. Death Cab for Cutie - Codes and Keys Songs 1. La Dispute - You & I in Unison 2. Charlie Simpson - Riverbanks 3. Frank Turner - Redemption 4. Panic! at the Disco - Trade Mistakes 5. Frank Ocean - Strawberry Swing 6. The Hotel Year - Title-Track (There is a Light) 7. Dance Gavin Dance - Purple Reign 8. Coldplay - Every Teardrop is a Waterfall 9. Adele - Set Fire to the Rain 10. Moving Mountains - The Cascade 11. Gotye - Somebody That I Used to Know 12. Mansions - Call Me When It's Over 13. Drake - Take Care 14. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues 15. Bon Iver - Beth/Rest 16. The Weeknd - High for This 17. M83 - Midnight City 18. The Rosebuds - Cover Ears 19. Blink-182 - Ghost on the Dance Floor 20. Deas Vail - Summer Forgets Me 21. Farewell Continental - The Greatest of All Time (How You Feelin' Now?) 22. Radiohead - Lotus Flower 23. The Dangerous Summer - Siren 24. Thursday - Sparks Against the Sun 25. Death Cab for Cutie - Stay Young, Go Dancing
Oh shit, this was their first album right? I feel like I've maybe only heard a song or two from this. I didn't come on board with this band until Goodness, and remember casually revisiting their older stuff and being shocked out how different it was.
1. Butch Walker & the Black Widows - The Spade My favorite Butch Walker album! Every song on here is a party and this was an album my entire family could find something to enjoy on. I covered "Summer of 89" at a hometown show once for a bunch of folks Butch's age and it went over very well, so thanks Butch! 2. Foo Fighters - Wasting Light If not the best Foo FIghters album, this one is my favorite. I got to see the band live for the first time when they toured this, my high school rock band covered "Bridge Burning," and I even bought the laser cut-out crash cymbal Taylor used on the livestream where they played the album live from Dave's garage. This is also one of the few Foo albums where I can look at the track listing and remember what each song sounds like. 3. Dan Andriano in the Emergency Room - Hurricane Season I like this album more than 2-3 Alk3 albums, tbh. Dan knocks it out of the park, delivering some of his catchiest choruses and moodiest ballads. VERY Honorable Mentions Frank Turner - England Keep My Bones My favorite Frank Turner album and arguably one of his most consistent. The magic isn't quite gone after this, but I don't think any of the albums after have quite lived up. The Swellers - Good For Me This was my favorite Swellers album for a time, I think just because I was excited that they got to record with Bill Stevenson. The back half is definitely weaker than the front, but a lot of their best songs are on here. Primus - Green Naugahyde One of the most consistent Primus albums, imo. Also one of the most accessible, which isn't saying much. I really love this album for some reason. Mars Argo - Linden Place First off, I do want to say fuck Titanic Sinclair. Second, I think Mars herself is what really makes this power pop EP work. If anyone, (@irthesteve) has a download of this, it has been removed from streaming services and I'd love to hear it again. Bayside - Killing Time My first and favorite Bayside album! Or at least tied with TWW. I think this is probably their most consistent and I'm glad they went all-out with the Gil Norton production. Fountains of Wayne - Sky Full of Holes The final FoW album, unfortunately. Drags a bit in the second half, but there are songs on here just as good as their heyday. The Lonely Island - Turtleneck & Chain The first Lonely Island album to feel like an actual album. The hype for this was real and my friends and I wore this album the fuck out. The Rest (in no particular order) Cake - Showroom of Compassion Cake gonna Cake. Their slowest and quietest album, which is saying something. The Rosebuds – Loud Planes Fly Low Everyone on AP.net hyped this band and album up and I largely think this is still a solid album. Thrice - Major/Minor My first Thrice album and I was very confused by it. I still like it, but would it have killed them to include a little sonic variation? Yellowcard - When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes Underwhelming to me, but I was not anxiously awaiting their return. I didn't truly click with the band until Southern Air. Jack's Mannequin - People & Things Also underwhelming and I'm not judging with hindsight, because I didn't get into this band until 2018. It's pretty obvious that this one is several notches weaker than the albums preceding. I'm reading Three Pianos right now and I'm on this section and he doesn't have a lot to say about it. blink-182 - Neighborhoods LOVED most of this album when it came out. I definitely was waiting with baited breath for this reunion. It hasn't aged very well and songs that didn't used to be have definitely become filler. Taking Back Sunday - Taking Back Sunday Meh. Listened a lot when I was younger, but probably my least favorite TBS album if I had to pick. The Black Keys - El Camino Victory lap album! I let the gal I took to junior prom borrow my CD of this and I still have never gotten it back. Cage the Elephant - Thank You, Happy Birthday Some god-awful songs on here, but some excellent all-timers and the energy is unmatched. "Weird Al" Yankovic - Alpocalypse A lower Al album for me, mostly because half of it had been released years prior as part of the Internet Leaks EP. I really love "Skipper Dan" though. K Sera - The Cantos II Too bad no one remembers this band. Good proggy Forgive Durden-like music. MUTEMATH - Odd Soul Jam city. Probably my favorite until Play Dead came out. "Prytania" rules. New Found Glory - Radiosurgery I do not get the ambivalence towards this album. Simple, catchy songs with exactly the same lyrics they've been writing the whole time. Sum 41 - Screaming Bloody Murder I do kinda get the less-than-rapturous celebration this album gets. There are some good songs, but it is extremely bloated. Patrick Stump - Soul Punk Always been a good album and set the stage for the reunion. Panic! At the Disco - Vices & Virtues Always been torn on this album. I either really love it or think it's the worst, depending on the day. The lyrics certainly take a nosedive after Ryan Ross leaves, but the melodies are still there. Tune-Yards - WHOKILL Too bad this band doesn't have the same energy anymore, this album has some killers. The Dangerous Summer - War Paint Great album that I wish I had been there for the release of.
