1. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot Top 3 album ever imo 2. The Microphones - The Glow Pt. 2 Maybe too long but what an achievement. I think I Want Wind to Blow is one of the great album openers ever, the way it explodes in the second half is such a peak music moment for me. 3. Radiohead - Amnesiac Third best Radiohead album tough to have to leave out the photo album which I think is top 3 death cab. Oh Inverted World is a fun pick too but a clear step down from these others. Very easy too 5 for me, though.
1. Slipknot - Iowa 2. Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American 3. Thursday - Full Collapse 4. Blink 182 - TOYPJ 5. Jay Z - The Blue Print 6. Death Cab for Cutie - Photo Album 7. System of a Down - Toxicity 8. Eve - Scorpion 9. Converge - Jane Doe 10. Foxy Brown - Broken Silence
yeah the bloat of the microphones album holds it back for me but if i made top 10 songs from this year it’d probably have two
1. The Strokes - Is This It? 2. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 3. Radiohead - Amnesiac 4. DCFC - The Photo Album 5. Spoon - GCT
what in the actual fuck, Spotify - they have YHF labeled as 2002. As soon as I saw your #1, I had to check my playlists and make the change. Wild.
1. Kamelot - Karma 2. The Microphones - The Glow Pt. 2 3. Radiohead - Amnesiac Karma is a pretty perfect power metal album with some of my favourite vocals in all of music. The title track is a highlight with a phenomenal chorus and the closing Elizabeth trilogy is a great distillation of everything I love about the band, depicting the descent into madness of Elizabeth Bathory. One of my favourite endings to any album. The Glow Pt. 2 is Phil Elverum's masterpiece, filled with fantastic songwriting exploring loss and the confrontation of it. Some of my favourite lyrics ever written are on here and the mix of acoustic guitars, delicate vocals and the occasional blasts of noise and distortion perfectly represent the emotions the album takes you through. It's an album that I grow more appreciation for every time I revisit it. Amnesiac isn't quite on the same level as Kid A for me but it's honestly not that far off, probably a top 3 Radiohead record for me. Filled with fantastic songs like "Pyramid Song", "Knives Out" and my personal favourite; "Life in a Glass House". Honourable mentions; 4. Muse - Origin of Symmetry; I miss this version of Muse, some fantastic songs on here. Huge hooks, great vocals, noisy and energetic. "New Born" and "Bliss" in particular are everything I want from this band. 5. Opeth - Blackwater Park; Surprised at how much I've grown to love this album since I'm not the biggest fan of harsh vocals like this but the songwriting is so good and the softer sections with the clean vocals really opened up the album to me. 6. John Mayer - Room for Squares; Doesn't quite hit the heights he would on later albums and it's a bit inconsistent but I still think it's a pretty great debut album filled with catchy tunes and clever songwriting. 7. Death Cab for Cutie - The Photo Album; Probably my least favourite of Death Cab's great period but there's still a lot to love on here, especially in the back half. It's just got a bit of a weak start for me. 8. Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American; Great pop rock record with some ace singles. "Sweetness" never gets old for me. A few songs I don't care for hold it back from being higher for me. 9. Tenacious D - Tenacious D; I've cooled off a lot on this over the years but I still enjoy it a lot and genuinely love Jack Black's voice. 10. maudlin of the Well - Bath; This has so many cool, creative moments musically that I can appreciate but never really comes together as a whole for me. The vocals can be pretty hit or miss. Thought I'd give doing write ups a go since I always appreciate and enjoy reading them from those that do. I just find it hard to really eloquently describe or explain what I like about music, haha. This should give me good practice though!
Both are technically true. The band streamed the album on their website in 2001, but it didn't have an official retail release until 2002.
Somehow missed Vespertine. Wouldn't quite crack my top 3 but should be high on my HM. Beautiful album.
Damn, didn’t realize Full Collapse was 2001. I’d have that around where I have OIW. Also honorable mention for American Nightmare - Background Music. I’m not a huge hardcore fan, but that’s probably my favorite album in the genre.
Ah Ok interesting - I should've scrolled through the Wiki page a bit more to read that. I wasn't quite cool enough to be listening to Wilco actively in '02, but I remember a few older friends talking about "Jesus, Etc" and such, and I came around on them just a few years later.
1. Saves the Day - Stay What You Are 2. Jay-Z - The Blueprint 3. Weezer - Green Lot of good stuff this year! Aaliyah Ja Rule Death Cab The Shins
some weeks it’s my favorite of theirs. the morning bell version on it blows the kid a version out of the water
I always look forward to Mondays for these threads now! These early 2000s are fun because I can really tell that I was a child who only listened to 10 albums a year. 1. Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American This album, much like Clarity, has unraveled itself for me over time. As a child, I only loved the first half, but as an adult I've been fortunate enough to discover back-half bangers like Get It Faster and Cautioners. 2. Alkaline Trio - From Here to Infirmary Not my favorite of theirs anymore, but I think it was when I was a kid. They broaden both lyrically and musically on this album but the Dan songs provide enough emotional backbone to give it some weight. 3. Sum 41 - All Killer, No Filler One of the most influential albums of all time for my childhood. Loved the hits and the sense of humor the band had in their music and videos. Learned what an abortion is because of this song. Honorable mentions: Blink 182 - Take Off Your Pants and Jacket (Solid album, lyrics are a bit juvenile for it to be an all-timer for me.) Gorillaz - Gorillaz (Albarn would perfect the formula on the next two albums, but this is a great place to start. I get a shot of nostalgia straight to the vein whenever I hear the opening chords to 5/4.) Tenacious D - Tenacious D (This was a college discovery for me. Their secret weapon is how fucking good at guitar Kyle is.) Weezer - Green Album (Loved this album when I was young because I didn't wait 6 years for 28 minutes of music. Still some great power-pop. I hate Crab though.) Relient K - The Anatomy of the Tongue In Cheek (Half killer, lots of filler. But they start to get it right here. Pressing On, Sadie Hawkins, Failure to Excommunicate, etc. all hint at the band's future.) Rx Bandits - Progress (This album is just a ton of fun.) System of a Down - Toxicity (Great album that is notable not only for the songwriting craft and overall energy, but also for the insane/improbable commercial success.) Finally, 2001 blessed us with this:
1. Thursday - Full Collapse 2. Jay Z - The Blueprint 3. The Appleseed Cast - Low Level Owl 4. The Strokes - Is This It 5. Mogwai - Rock Action Cursive's Burst and Bloom came out this year and it's still an incredible EP.
