Radiohead's seminal alt-rock masterpiece OK Computer won 1997. Let's see who wins 1998.

    Billboard chart-topping albums of 1998:
Garth Brooks - Sevens (cont. from 1997)
Celine Dion - Let's Talk About Love (cont. from 1997)
Soundtrack - Titanic (cont. from 1997)
Dave Matthews Band - Before These Crowded Streets
Garth Brooks - The Limited Series
DMX - It's Dark and Hell is Hot
    Soundtrack - City of Angels
Master P - MP Da Last Don

Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
    Marilyn Manson - Mechanic Animals
    Jay Z - Vol. 2 ... Hard Knock Life
Alanis Morissette - Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie
    Garth Brooks - Double Live

    Billboard chart-topping singles of 1998:
Elton John - Something About the Way You Look Tonight (cont. from 1997)
Savage Garden - Truly Madly Deeply (cont. from 1997)
Janet Jackson - Together Again (cont. from 1997)
    Usher - Nice & Slow
Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On
Will Smith - Gettin Jiggy wit It (cont. from 1997)

    Next - Too Close
    Mariah Carey - My All
Brady and Monica - Boy is Mine

    Monica - The First Night
    Barenaked Ladies - One Week
    Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop
    Divine - Lately
    R. Kelly - I'm Your Angel

What are your top three albums for 1998? We will keep a running tally and eventually have some sort of bracket. For me it would be:
    1. Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come
    2. Elliott Smith - XO
    3. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

What are some of the forgotten gems from the year? What is overrated? What did you discover at a young age and what did you discover later?

Black Star was the album that really started my love for hip hop and getting in to stuff on my own and not just relying on bet and my brother.

Such mixed feelings on NMH in the year 2022. Aeroplane is a pretty wonderful record, full of great lyrics and interesting music but it's aged pretty poorly for me. Very small amount of NMH songs I ever want to listen to anymore. I don't think it's as simple as myth = good, and then they came back and the myth was gone and now it's clear they were never that good, but I think it's a little bit overrated AND 20 years later it feels like it influenced a lot of music I don't care for. Rambling but I am already bummed it's gonna win.

I bought my first ever CD in 1998, aged six year old:

England got knocked out on penalties in the quarter finals of the world cup that year, and I cried when David Beckham got sent off.

    Harrisburg, PA's own Fuel!

I remember our local rock station just being ALL OVER this song in the summer of '98. Their first two albums are both still very enjoyable.
