I think things are gonna get wild once we get to the 90s where a lot of us were consuming music as it was coming out and there's going to be a bigger variety of albums that different people have on their lists, etc
I'm excited to see how these lists start to vary going forward! I've been creating playlists of albums I've missed year by year based off these thread - way too much music to try and consume but looking forward to checking out all these albums over time I've just started to get into Bruce Springsteen over the last couple of weeks because of these threads and I'm a big fan!
1. Fugazi - 13 Songs 2. Kate Bush - The Sensual World 3. The Cure - Disintegration Fugazi's debut of sorts (it's their two EPs not a "proper" album), but shows them taking the emotional angry 80s DC hardcore and taking it into different directions, influenced by reggae and Bad Brains especially. Some of the all time greatest punk / post hardcore / indie rock songs appear on here, a must listen. The Sensual World is Bush's follow up to Hounds of Love, and sensibly doesn't try to do the same thing again. Closing track, "This Woman's Work" might be my all time favourite power ballad. Disintegration might be the best Cure album, a long dense masterpiece, full of synths and shoe-gazy esque guitar tones. Robert Smith didn't lose his knack of writing brilliant pop songs with tracks like Lovesong or Pictures of You. Honourable mentions; De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising: A classic golden age hip hop record, a positive joyous hip-hop record, with some fantastic singles. Nirvana - Bleach: Nirvana's debit, rough and scuzzy, but all the signs that they'd be the biggest band in the world in a couple of years. Minor Threat - Complete Discography: A compilation, but with everything they recorded only coming in at about 45 minutes, it feels like an album. You can hear their progression too, starting to move away from the short, furious hardcore that starts the album. Bad Religion - No Control: Another great Bad Religion album, with my favourite Bad Religion track, "You" (though that's probably because it was on Tony Hawks 2). Stone Roses - Stone Roses: The hugely influential Manchester band's debut album, and with them at their absolute best here. Incredible sort of psychedelic indie rock, and incredible guitar sounds. 808 State - 90: Really early dance / techno music pioneers, a fantastic and influential house album, also from Manchester.
I’d check out A Walk Across Rooftops too if you dig Hats! Maybe even do that first. Perfect weather for both right now
Man if the weather is right (which it is) and I’m in a certain mood (which I am), you could sell me on either of the first two Blue Nile records being the best of all time

My pick for forgotten gem of '89 - by The Ocean Blue. Super underrated band from Hershey, PA which is about an hour from where I grew up. I was too young to really recall, pretty sure this song was a moderate MTV hit for them. I know my Dad was a big fan considering they were local boys. They went on to make better full albums than their debut, but this song is undeniable. AND CHECK OUT THE EPIC BOWL CUT!
I was really looking forward to giving that Richard Marx album a vote in the tally, as it would have been my #1 in a couple of previous years. But this year is just too goddamn good
I just had one of those moments... "Richard Marx, Richard Marx, who.... do I know any songs by this guy...." *checks Spotify* "OHHHHH! He's the Right Here Waiting guy!" I feel like there are so many of those songs from the 80s where I KNOW the song by heart but was too young to know/care who sang it. Will add the album to my list to check out.
It’s easy to peg him as “cheesy”, and I wouldn’t blame anyone if they did, but “That Was Lulu”’s filler aside, it’s wall to wall with hooks, production craft, and really passionate songs. You just have to be willing to go with the arena touches
1. Queen - The Miracle 2. The Cure - Disintegration 3. Paul McCartney - Flowers In The Dirt 4. Billy Joel - Storm Front 5. Nirvana - Bleach 6. Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique first listens I was into: Aerosmith - Pump Elvis Costello - Spike Janet Jackson - Janet Jackson' Rhythm Nation 1814 XTC - Oranges & Lemons Underworld - Change The World Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever Stevie Nicks - The Other Side of the Mirror Don Henley - The End of the Innocence New Order - Technique
LOL - I can be guilty of this too for sure. Fact I did not even know that Flowers in the Dirt existed until Sunday when delving into this years' playlist. I listened to it and was actually pleasantly surprised, hence sneaking it into my Top 20 with some bias lol. When reading about the song "This One" on Wiki, I learned likely why I had never heard of it before: "Like other songs from Flowers in the Dirt, despite the song's modest chart success, to date it has not been included on any McCartney compilation album."
