Led Zeppelin's IV won 1971. Let's see who wins 1972.

    Neil Young - Harvest
    America - America
    Roberta Flack - First Take

The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
    Elton John - Honky Chateau
    Chicago - V
    Curtis Mayfield - Super Fly
Cat Stevens - Catch Bull at Four
The Moody Blues - Seventh Sojourn

    Billboard chart-topping singles of 1972:

The Staples Singers - I'll Take You There
Sammy Davis Jr. - The Candy Man
Neil Diamond - Song Sung Blue

    Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again
Looking Glass - Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)
Three Dog Night - Black and White
Mac Davis - Baby, Don't Get Hooked On Me
    Michael Jackson - Ben

Johnny Nash - I Can See Clearly Now
The Temptations - Papa Was a Rolling Stone
Helen Reddy - I Am Woman
Billy Paul - Me and Mrs. Jones

What are your top three albums for 1972? We will keep a running tally and eventually have some sort of bracket. For me it would be:

    1. David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
    2. Black Sabbath - Vol. 4
    3. The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street

What are some of the forgotten gems from the year? What is overrated? What did you discover at a young age and what did you discover later?

Ehhhh, I dunno, I've really tried a lot and have listened to Exile at least 3 times... but it just doesn't click with me as an album, I find it sooo long and bloated. I tend to just be more into the band's singles than their full albums. I can acknowledge that they push boundaries a lot, but just not in ways that I tend to enjoy.

    bring on the major leagues

    1. Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
    2. Neil Young - Harvest
    3. Paul Simon - Paul Simon

I’m not a die hard Stones guy by any means, plenty of their catalog left for me to explore including some peak stuff, but Exile is a towering achievement of a record. Not my #1 record of the decade, but on my short list for it.

As for the other two, I’ll be boring and go with two very good but not quite peak records from two of my all time favorites. Harvest is up there with Neil’s most complete albums and also home to probably the greatest guitar tone ever recorded (Words and Alabama). PS s/t is Paul at his most pop and fun, and man could he be pop and fun when he wanted to. Probably # 2 or 3 of his solo albums for me.

i’m not trying to get too political but i feel like if the stones hung it up right after goats head soup, the beatles v. the stones would be a slam dunk in their favor. the biggest argument against often cited, which is totally fair, is how badly they diluted the product. going on on three albums in a row that are pretty much perfect is hard to top

Also have moved onto Fanny Hill by Fanny. Chorus of "Ain't That Peculiar" is fucking massive

I think their s/t is the best by a HAIR over one of Spo's all time favorites (Pick of the Litter). Both 5 star classics, but the s/t has more of the identifiable big hits. Pretty much THE template Philly Soul artist.

George is a big fan of their first album with G.C. Cameron's gritty lead vocals, and I dig that one too, but they really hit their stride on Philly International.
