Huge expectations. He very well might be my favorite songwriter. This song is absolutely devastating...
He trashed Taylor like four separate times when I saw him in 2016. The cover art + title + release date feels weirdly and specifically intentional, even though I imagine it’s a complete coincidence. You don’t work for two years on something and treat the release like a joke.
I forget the exact words and wouldn’t want to misquote, but it was jokingly dismissive of her songwriting. That said, he’s been very active on IG with overt pop fair like Coldplay and The 1975, so it’s possible his opinions about the relative merits of her music have changed. Based on how personal his note was that accompanied the release of this song, it’s got to be just a bunch of weird coincidences.
Anyway, song’s incredible. Love that it’s essentially an intro track with no repeating chorus, which is very unlike all his prior first “singles”. Also agree with whoever said this feels like a culmination of his prior sounds. These lyrics: So I gather my impressions of the universal sigh And hope that someone's listening to their radio tonight Though it doesn't really matter with so many come before And who the hell are we fooling, no one buys records any more
