Wow, I liked this way more than I was expecting.

I’ve always enjoyed the franchise, Days is great (though maybe not the masterpiece some see it as) and Weeks is a decent thriller, not as good as Days but it has a nasty streak that is kind of fascinating.

This one felt much more ambitious and its willingness to swing for the fences paid off for me. Really interested to see where they take it from here.

Also more people here should be listening to Young Fathers. Fantastic group.

The priest at the beginning is not a good start.

This was okay. It felt too long in a lot of parts and the leads are not as charismatic as the foursome in 28 Days Later so it is a lot harder to really care about them, especially since we know the kid is immune from real danger.

It isn't a coincidence that this is the second long-running horror franchise this year to wonder aloud what happens to the fetus if it is exposed to the evil, and it just goes to show how little lore there is to squeeze out of these things. It is very much Lunchlady Doris warning how little meat is in these gym mats. Since these are not undead zombies, the first film explicitly showed that they starve to death on a normal timeline, and you have to figure the constant blood-vomiting and sprinting would dehydrate them pretty quickly. They throw in one of them eating fish to try and rectify it but it really isn't enough. I read a review that joked about how easy it would be for the rest of the European Union to airdrop weapons and food, but instead we have Super Zombies who somehow get bigger and stronger? It starts to turn into a video game rather than what it came from. 28 Days Later is about Jim learning to become the hero while Selena learns to trust again when she doesn't immediately kill Jim like she said she would. At least you got to see every camera angle imaginable?

I mean, I actually don't necessarily disagree with them on the video game like way they handled the "upgrades" infected.

Granted it's been 28 Years and things mutate over time but there's definitely something odd about the archetypal nature of some of the infected.

Overall I think it's a good movie with some nice action and surprising heart, but I wouldn't put it as my favorite of the three. It feels a little too separated.

I would say #2 is the separated one

We talked about it in another thread, but long-running zombie stories always run into the same problem. After the outbreak and the mass deaths, the survivors adapt and the threat generally goes away. They rely on human drama that gets further and further removed from the situation. The kid being mad at his dad for cheating on his dying mom lacks the compelling drama of Jim's group trying to survive.

The story of a child being forced to grow up fast in this environment was very compelling. His father taught him how to kill, and his mother taught him what death actually means. Beautiful film
