Finally got to see this tonight and oh wow, not what I expected but I loved it. Had no idea Danny Boyle was going to hit me so hard with an emotional rumination on the acceptance of death. I sat there welling up like “Jesus, Danny.”

I knew the tonal shift was going to come at the end because of all the discourse about it online so it didn’t throw me as much because I was anticipating it. I chuckled near the beginning of the film when they foreshadowed it in Spike’s room before he leaves to go out on his mission with his dad. He picks up that red Power Ranger looking toy to take with him and then sets it back down after changing his mind and literally says “see you later.”

    Whelp.

Curious to see where the next one leads. I have to assume that baby is potentially very dangerous for the community in that Samson seemed to be hunting Spike and Dr. Kelson in an attempt to get it back.

Seriously though, that whole section at the bone temple with Spike, Dr. Kelson, and Isla was hauntingly beautiful. That’s going to stick with me.

    Memento mori, folks.

I loved it leaving the theater but idk this might be my favorite of the year. Can’t believe they made a 3rd movie 18 years later and Boyle just freaked it like this. Meanwhile something like the new Jurassic movie just sounds like more lega-sequel garbage.

I haven’t seen any of Nia’s work but I hope she nails the sequel and I also hope it’s just as weird if not even weirder.

Nia's Candyman was a lot better than the reaction it got imo

I haven't really stopped thinking about this movie since I saw it. I know the ending was controversial but it definitely made me more intrigued for the next one, moreso than if it has just ended on a voiceover with the kid making his way into the wilderness or whatever which would have been the obvious choice

  9. Candyman is definitely interesting and worth the watch, even if I'm not 100% in love with it. I think she'll do well here

The only DaCosta movie I’ve seen is The Marvels, which. I quite enjoyed that movie in spite of its flaws (that I’m sure were out of her control), but also. I think that’s basically another way of saying “I’ve never seen a DaCosta film,” lol.

Recently rewatched the first two in preparation for this and found them to be pretty mid/whatever now.

This thing was fucking incredible, though. Performances, music, cinematography, story and themes, editing, etc. A lot of this is going to stay with me for a long time and I can’t wait to watch it again as well as see what comes next.

    Wow, what a film.

Also, I didn’t really find this “weird” at all other than the ending you could say. But maybe that’s because I saw Materialists yesterday and THAT was a very weird, not good film.

28 Days Later is still by far my favorite by a large margin.

Candyman was alright and The Marvels sounds like it was a deeply deeply compromised production. Lot of pressure to deliver the goods in the next movie after this one
