The reality is that the money can’t buy you a championship, but it can buy you the best opportunity to make it to the dance in October. You can buy yourself the depth to, say, operate without more than half of your starting rotation for most of a season. You can win 90 games with $30m of toilet money in a Michael Conforto and a Tanner Scott. But even then it’s not a given! The Mets spent almost as much as the Dodgers and they were on the first flight to Cancun.

What separates the Dodgers in a way that makes this feel like a real problem to some is that they are, from top to bottom, probably the best-run organization in sports. So when the money fails, they have guys they have either developed in their system from the beginning or rehabilitated who can fill myriad holes effectively. Free agents want to go there because they know they’ll be supported, be given the patience to work out their issues without losing opportunity (shoutout Dave Roberts), they know their families will be taken care of, they know the team will always be put in a position to compete. And now they’ve cornered the entire Japanese market, which they’ve been setting up since like five years before Ohtani became available to them knowing how much easier it would make all of this to keep rolling.

They also need to figure out revenue sharing too - the brewers and dodgers pay almost the same percentage of their yearly revenue to their team it’s just that the dodgers make a shit ton more revenuehah

Revenue sharing is the exact reason most of these owners feel free to cheap out lol. The A’s are getting the same share of the Dodgers’ money regardless of what they spend of their own
