but really the idea is that pitchers should not deceive baserunners

most common balk is a pitcher not coming fully set when working out of the stretch — they didn’t fully pause when coming set (when ball hand and glove come together)

other popular balk is left handed pitcher pickoffs. you have to cut a 45 degree angle to first but often a lefty pitcher essentially looks like they’re going to pitch the ball to the batter before cutting the angle at the last second, very difficult for baserunners
