I thought these guys typically didn't get big extensions until they're like 28

what gives

 

usually smaller market/smaller budget teams try to get these deals done with younger players to lock down franchise cornerstones for cheaper, usually done so to secure certainty for the players’ wallets (knowing they’ll be set for life) while the team feels like it’s protecting themselves by having them do a more modest deal early that balances the potential for the player to either overperform their AAV (team benefits and can maybe secure another good contract in free agency in their 30s) or they fall off a cliff get injured (player benefits, team isn’t too restricted with an albatross contract)

 

makes sense, I was just thinking there was some kind of cba stuff that prevented them from doing deals so early

and i'm remembering now that kc signed bobby to that big deal just last year too

some teams have signed players to extensions before they even take their first major league at bat

 

just like the small market atlanta braves
