his podcast is insufferable, just constantly cutting guests more interesting than him off for some banal story

My perspective of the problem is Press called that shit way too much. Poor play calling balance undermines a whole playbook and the ways that certain strategies play off each other in the long-game. To the point it doesn’t matter how good Trevor executes, cause even a well executed play still often relies on the defense not knowing what’s gonna happen.

Short passes are actually easy to defend if you see them coming, you simply play defense accordingly in a way that fully accounts for all the lateral lanes.

Usually that kind of full width of the field gap integrity comes at the sacrifice of less deep cushion, and that’s the trade off where you stack too many guys near the LOS and leave yourself vulnerable. But if the OC hasn’t given you a reason to fear an unexpected deep pass, then that’s a much easier chance to take, because you know a coach who doesn’t love / is skittish about deep passes and would rather win with YAC and misleading play design, is only throwing deep if he has to.

So you simply put a lot of guys up front to block off a lot of gaps on early downs, bet that he PROBABLY isn’t throwing deep and even if he is it’s not his wheelhouse, and hold those short passes to minimal gain… create third and long, and then you blitz on third down knowing even if they throw deep you’ll see it coming and they won’t have time. This is the part of meta strategy where stuff that works for college teams gets snuffed out by NFL teams who are better at playing chess, & predicting your next move based on tendencies and situation. If they know you aren’t taking risks, all of a sudden the cards are in their favor to take more educated risks based on knowing what you’re NOT likely to do.

it’s a double edged sword and you basically turn your whole offense into your QB being a sitting duck, cause you just made it easy for them to know when you’re throwing deep and when you’re not. So now they blitz whenever you drop back, have guys able to plug every gap when you try to run, and aren’t overpursuing short passes on early downs because those don’t have the element of surprise either. We saw this BIG time against the Ravens (and other games, but that game sticks out as one where our offense did NOTHING cause they saw every play coming).

So even though you MIGHT THINK “we gotta settle down our QB with easy passes and THEN throw deep when he’s in a rhythm”, in actuality being a coward and doing that too much puts your QB in an even more impossible situation defensively.

tldr throw deep early and often, take the risk and do it randomly on first and second down even during times when you’re focused on steady progress, and then your weird ass misdirection plays to get “easy yards” will work. It’s better to bring 3rd and 10 upon yourself sometimes because you at least tried to do something unexpected, than to try so hard to be “safe” and “efficient” that it becomes predictable and the defense is HANDING you a 3rd and 10 that they already know what youre going to do with.
