I just can’t believe Jimmy Smith’s career ended because he repeatedly tested positive for cocaine, it’s sad, dude tarnished his old legacy. Dude was still dicing up defenses and burning people deep in his last year, he continued to average 1000 yards a season (60 yards a game) on a run first team with a rookie / second year QB who wasn’t that good. 35 years old and still had easily 4.4 speed.

We talk about how Mike Evans hasn’t had a single season under 1K and how that’s gonna send him to the HOF - the only reason Jimmy didn’t have TEN STRAIGHT YEARS of 1K with the Jags was not injury or a slump year, it was because he got suspended a few games for doing coke (he was statistically on pace to easily break 1,000 again that season). He had 7 straight 1K’s before that and then had 2 more straight 1K’s to end his career.

And then he got arrested and went to jail / house arrest. He never even declined lmao he just pissed away the rest of his legacy. It’s not hard to imagine him being a SHOO-in for the Hall of Fame if he had even 2 more years of stat padding. He’d be in Reggie Wayne territory with 14K yards.

Jimmy was so fast too. If you watch Fred Taylor’s (playoff record) 90 yard run vs Miami, it’s already clear Fred is faster than everybody on that defense… and then at the end of the play, Fred barely even slowed down, Jimmy just casually fuckin teleports in front of him to get the last block lmao. It’s mind blowing cause here’s Fred who ran a 4.29 forty and was used to sprinting long distances from competing in 200m races in high school, and then Jimmy blows way by him and blocks a dude further down the field lmao it’s insane. He had to have been SO fast.

 

My talent comp for Jimmy Smith is honestly Ja’Marr Chase, I genuinely think he’d be similar in today’s NFL
