Not gonna quote Josh cause he can’t see it anyway but isn’t playing golf with colleagues a good way to ACTUALLY network with them? Like I’m sure in an office they want to see that you’re all business- but I would assume a trip like this is a way to connect with them as a PERSON. If they like you personally and connect with you enough to remember you, they probably are more likely to hook you up with future opportunities than other people doing an equally good job, no?

thats how I understand networking to work, anyway.

honestly i always look forward to out of the office work events because it feels like an opportunity to be a lot more personable with people, have a few cocktails and talk like regular people. the boss and supervisor to employee power dynamic disappears and you're just having a conversation with someone that can potentially impact your future.

You shouldn’t force yourself to golf just to network a bit but if it’s a hobby you enjoy there are definitely benefits

 

Or like even just being totally different than the person you're interacting with and not having any reason to vibe outside of your work

Just a tough balance to strike especially if you work in a super conservative place. I'm very fortunate it wasn't the case at my job

 

Oh well I assume Josh has enough investment in his actual job to not come off like that, I thought Dustin was saying if it’s clear you don’t like golf doing it anyway isn’t gonna help you network lol

 

I once connected with a guy I could tell I probably don’t like certain things about (but filtered myself and put on my social face anyway) because my buddy Ian invited me to an O’s game he went to with his bosses. They complimented me and my sports knowledge a lot. Then I followed up about a possible job opening we discussed and never got a response lol

 

I’m a very good bullshitter and can usually make conversation with anyone but it can be mentally exhausting. When we’d go out on chipotle’s dime though everyone would drink like crazy and mostly got along.

 

I can have and enjoy casual conversation but I cannot ass kiss or be fake with people I work with if that makes sense

I did always like work get-togethers, I'm very happy that I like a lot of the people in my general position at work. I wish I liked more people at work though and/or that they didn't lay off so many people I liked

 

If I straight up do not like someone I can’t hide that. I hang out with chipotle people sometimes and they invite this guy Thomas that I do not like and I only give him one word answers when he talks to me. I hate that guy.

The John mulaney thing about being the mayor of nothing and needing everyone to like you is me to a tee. At a work event I am nice to everyone, will small talk with everyone, etc. to a fault.

Then I get stuck in situations hearing about Warren’s bedridden father post stroke or Karen (her real name not the “Karen” thing) sending me photos by accident of her foot rash.
