My childhood house is like $600k right now according to Zillow but at the time my dad had it built as new construction for like 150k at most (probably less tbh) and it's 3bed/3bath

  18. I’ve said this before but wish I would have bought a smaller house that was less expensive. Having a big house just makes us buy and store more shit, it’s more expensive, and there’s only three of us. Wish we were able to get one of the first houses we looked at and then taken that money and just done more vacations or saved for a beach condo lol.

I love my house and I just wish the previous owner took better care of certain shit so we didn't have to replace it

Our amount of space I feel is very good, a real office would be nice but other than that I'm happy

When Laura's mom dies or goes into a home it'll be perfect (to be clear I don't want Laura's mom to die)

This is not an argument this is just me long-form analyzing my own viewpoint to understand it better, just to clarify. No one else needs to take this dialogue seriously or thoughtfully if they don’t want to lol

I think part of what I’m seeing is the residual effects of white flight - the fact that “normal American living” for most people is:

    A) not accessible for brown people and laborers whose families weren’t offered the same subsidies and loan assistance in the 1950s, and thus have not built up any wealth from flipping houses that they can use to afford what houses cost now

    b) often really lacking in culture and color and nature, because of the lack of diversity of people who could move to the suburbs over the years.

    C) prioritizing American individualism like mowing down ALL the trees and designing mazes of cul-de-sacs for the sake of everyone having “this is MY yard” rather than coexisting with the nature and infrastructure that’s already there, and being connected by stroads and enormous parking lots that are hostile to nature and pedestrians for the sake of everyone solo driving their own car all the time, etc.

I was one of the minority POC (because my parents were in the military) who grew up that way, so it’s not like I can’t empathize with the majority of Americans simply being comfortable with that lifestyle, nobody needs to think about all this when they just want to buy an affordable house they can keep their kids safe in. And I am susceptible to the same creature comforts even while I critique them sociopolitically.

so while gentrification might be the wrong word, in general I feel like it’s all connected to the even larger concept of American society being focused around “myself, my own family, and people exactly in my class bracket” rather than how communities can better each other and grow into something way more inclusive and diverse. And that’s what rubs me the wrong way, that in suburbs you can clearly visualize the “myself, my own family” as being white collar workers with money and white privilege (or in the case of my parents, POC who are brainwashed against their own cultural expression because that’s what they’re told they have to do to have a gainful income) no other group would design a neighborhood like that lol. It’s not so much that it’s like the 1950s and people are still moving to suburbs just to get their kids away from black kids in schools lol. It’s more so the residual effects of, “that’s how it started, here’s where we are as a society, this is why we’re so divided by race and class even when our hearts are in the right place and we don’t wanna be.”

Gentrification in cities rubs me the wrong way too. From an aesthetic standpoint though, at least in some cities like Atlanta you can still see the historic cultural diversity that got them to the vibrant state they are in.
