I didn’t really do all that for this tour, it’s all jumbled up with the money I spent on recordings. I’m not coming home any broker than I would’ve been from my normal spending at home though so I consider it a success.

Kinda tough to gauge when all your merch sales are going toward paying back the merch printing (we made 50 more shirts and also added tote bags) and the mixing of the singles (couple hundred per song). Next tour I’ll get a much better idea cause we’ll have broken even on merch and can start making money back off the remaining shirts and bags, but right now I relied on our cut of the tickets and/or bar sales direct from the venue (plus additional donations / tips) to cover tour expenses. And some of these shows we barely made money from the venue itself cause we’ve played with several very unprofessional bands who drew almost 0 people.

In Nashville, Winston-Salem, Dallas, Jackson MS, we literally drew more people than the support bands (that’s REALLY saying a lot in Dallas cause we only drew @Fucking Dustin , @David- and @Laura lol… the other bands brought like, a girlfriend or two)

I learned a lot though, not just gonna blame other bands, although at a certain point it got very frustrating… and I’m glad the tour ended on a strong note with good turnouts / pay in NOLA, Tallahassee and Jacksonville.

Just gonna focus on controlling what I can control. What *i* could’ve done to find better bands is cast a wider net earlier and pick the bands that are most responsive so that we can have reciprocated teamwork with promoting the show.

I had this theory that our best way to gain notoriety is to play with other amazing bands in our genre, and that if I established connections online with bands that I LOVE and that are pro, that if we ask them early enough we can get them to commit. But that did not work out, half the bands were already booked out MONTHS in advance, the other half were the opposite and couldn’t commit to any plans that month because they weren’t sure about their personal life plans yet.

It’s a crapshoot when the best “time” to ask a band to join your show is. Also always possible they got asked about like 5 shows the same week and are forced to play favorites and pick one. We gotta have full band music out in order to be the “favorite” and have some of these bands choose us over bands they already know they wanna work with.

So my “theory” backfired and ended up making me wait too long for concrete responses from my top-choice bands, while all the medium-good bands got booked, and then last minute I was only left with bands who are available last minute for a REASON cause they don’t have a fuckin strategy or plan at all lol. But hey, glad I tried it. There really isn’t a better way to learn how to promote a band other than trying shit and seeing what does & doesn’t work

Greenville should secede to North Carolina and Charleston should secede to Georgia because the rest of South Carolina fucking sucks lol. Wild that the only two good parts of the state are on opposite corners

 

The only state I’ve been to that might be worse is Mississippi. Louisiana is pretty bad, but New Orleans does a lot of heavy lifting there.

 

I’m pretty open to places too. For example, I actually thought Texas was great in some ways, even though its not my vibe, I think North Georgia is pretty great even if South Georgia is bleak as fuck , I thought Indiana was charming even though I could never live outside of the Chicago suburbs, I think Ohio is really underrated, etc. but damn when we talk about areas with no redeeming qualities I do not see the appeal of 99% of SC or MS whatsoever.

Sucking outside of two cities is one thing because there’s usually a lot of cool shit around those cities. I wouldn’t like most of Missouri (which is a good example because two cool cities are also on the corners) but I am sure there’s a lot to love about Kansas City and St. Louis metro areas, and that’s half of its population. Sucking outside of two towns, that are nowhere close to major city size, and having zero major cities, AND your rural areas being nowhere near as beautiful as the neighboring states, is a totally different story lol. That’s SC/MS. Like, at least Montana and Wyoming are beautiful lol

Oh another big one: I gotta stop being wishy washy about street busking and do it confidently. In both Memphis and Austin I couldn’t get a show and after awhile of being like unsure if it’s worth it, I pushed through and set up anyway and still made gas and food money even though it was late. Imagine how much I could make if I set up at a peak time and brought the merch with me. Imagine if I got to town early enough to find a spot with an outdoor outlet so I can bring my electric guitar and Jared can add some cocktail drums (just hi hat, snare, kick, maybe ride). we seriously regretted not bringing all that shit to the Pfluger pedestrian bridge in Austin, which had an outlet, constant foot traffic, no cops, free parking, and no businesses to complain about us
