Dink is hurt and I don’t think it’s fair to say he’s being weird because he’s reacting hurt to having his condition be referenced in the way it was before the conversation looped around to a more productive state

When I am hurt I react that way too even if some of that reaction is done while logged off

Lots of shitty takes going on around here. How about you guys just shut up and listen to what Randall and Dink are saying without trying to refute them.

But you all seem to have to argue about everything when someone is just trying to talk about their experiences that are different than yours so I guess that’s impossible.

I’m by no means an expert in any way at all, but I would imagine going to the theater may not work well for some people on the spectrum who are more affected by sensory overload from the sound being too loud or distracted by people eating their popcorn, the crowds, sitting still in a seat for 2 hours, it being dark, etc.

Those aren’t the main reasons why my wife and I don’t go to the theater or watch a ton of movies, but definitely a factor why we do sometimes prefer to watch at home vs in a theater.

Our main reason is we just have extremely different movie tastes and we’re both guilty of not wanting to bring the other to a movie and pay for one they may not like as much. So we just wait till it’s on streaming. However, I did bring her to like Jurassic Park or Godzilla in IMAX which def was TOO much for her lol

Ya just gotta ask yourself sometimes what prize you’re winning by trying to prove whether someone just doesn’t like movies, or if them being on the spectrum is related. Seems like a tremendously stupid game and here we all sit in the tremendously stupid prize.

I just can’t imagine the flight attendants stopping their service of handing out chips and water to go crank out a Bloody Mary for some dude in row 25 of a JetBlue flight.

Coming back to this thread I thought of a way to explain it that makes more sense to everybody.

Neurodivergence tends to make your attention span uneven, inconsistent, and unpredictable. People who are autistic / ADHD all have different ways of compensating for this, for example Matt having a million tabs open and being in the middle of 5 tasks at once all the time lol. He simply rotates from hyperfixation to hyperfixation. That is… ONE way of handling it. There are infinite ways of self managing.

this does not mean you always struggle to pay attention, this also does not mean you always hyperfixate. Often what you hyperfixate on and what you can’t stay fixated on has to do with what you’re passionate about and what’s more of a casual interest. But it can also be really really hard to predict which version of your brain you are going to get. This is why some autistic folks find comfort in hyperfixating on media while others need to do anything BUT sit down and watch TV to keep themselves engaged and occupied. For some people it IS that happy catnip that settles their brain down! For Dustin it’s videogames! For me it’s playing music! for a lot of people on this site it’s listening to new music!

I get phaynes point that this does illustrate that being into movies or not into movies is a large factor here, but what I didn’t agree with is acting like neurodivergence has nothing to do with it. If anything it exacerbates that issue and makes it more extreme. My partner was telling me I was probably experiencing ADHD burnout yesterday because I have the ability to hyperfixate and go on overdrive when most people would more quickly be like “nah fuck this imma chill.” But then that comes with huge “swings” where I cannot motivate myself to do a single fucking thing and I’m exhausted for days.

people telling me that isn’t a thing is always going to be silly to me, you are not inside my brain.

 

They literally just give them a mini bottle of vodka and Bloody Mary mix and the person has to pour it in themselves in my experience lol. I’ve never ordered one but Sarah has.
