I spend a lot of time with my Costa Rica colleagues so I’m trying out their lunches to mix up the “looks like it’s another turkey sandwich today” vibe

Not yet since the last one… I ain’t home recording so I have to spread it out for money reasons. $45 an hour (and $25 an hour for any solo work I do in terms of picking takes and aligning rhythms) is no fuckin joke lol. I am broke again every time i pay what I owe the studio lol

 

I’ve wasted some of that money too tbh… I wish it didn’t take me so long to get in a creative headspace for recording, sometimes I need like a half hour to 45 minutes to get started. Once I go I GO and have like, unlimited stamina and extremely fine tuned ears for “that’s not quite right let’s get it right” lol, I suppose I make up for that time by literally not taking breaks (I’ll maybe take one 10 minute break if the session is longer than 4 hours).

but it is a LOT - so a good chunk of recording money was spent getting my head right just so I can have that level of detail and motivation for several hours. Usually I just woke up 30-45 minutes before I came to the studio and I need a bowl and coffee/takeout breakfast and some conversation before I’m ready to go. But it’s not fair to expect that for free so I’m often paying for the first half hour or more of studio time just to shoot the shit with Garrett and do some verbal planning while I eat some breakfast and smoke lol. (The weed 100% makes me more creative and detailed & im not interested in judgment from folks who haven’t experienced this in their own creative pursuits)

Every artist has a “creative process” so to speak and I do feel like I’m more productive overall, and get takes that I like way sooner into the session, this way. But this would be so much easier if I was on a label and they just paid for a month+ block of studio time all at once and I could sleep there and not have to work my day job and shit. I would finish an album in like 5% of the time lol. Needing breaks for both my budget and for my energy (because going straight from your bed to a studio for 5 hours and then working on your feet the same night for another 8-9 until 10:30-midnight is exhausting) is 99% of the reason it’s taking so long
