It's wild to me that Chorus.fm is a site I go to for the Posting thread and seeing what kind of shenanigans my buds are up to, while for many others, it can be a place to go to hell on the internet, the Politics thread.

 

I agree that this contributes to the mindset overall - and I think it’s practically / functionally true for most larger live performances of professional artists. Like yeah when a concert or sports game or comedy show or whatever ticket costs more than a two week grocery bill - absolutely people are choosing the former less often.

But it definitely feels like other factors are at play when we’re discussing local $8-$12 dive bar shows (basically the economic equivalent of a $5-$7 show when I was first getting started). even with like 100% inflation and fees tacked on, even factoring in the concept that the sound and venue isn’t top notch sound or comfort… $15 total is not a lot of money to go see multiple bands.

I had hoped a squeeze of the economy would drive people back towards cheaper alternatives like supporting local / independent artists to avoid the price gouging of the corporate music industry - but the simultaneous effect of streaming cheapening the fiscal value of music + making new music you haven’t heard lose the mystique & novelty that say, a new movie with cool looking previews still has… has made it so much easier to just choose the “avoid live music and buying recorded music entirely” route rather than “source it from much cheaper places”. I wonder how different things would be if people had the conviction to legitimately mass-scale boycott Ticketmaster and Spotify and force the corporate music industry to cater to audiences again and not just LiveNation / stockholders / technocrats / themselves if it wants to make money.
