Song #7 out of 8 on my upcoming record is complete through the recording stage. Finished all the vocals and harmonies and picked all the best takes between the last two days. One song left and then it goes to mixing. Still on track to be done by year’s end.

This was a song that I considered dropping from the record multiple times, but that I kept bringing back cause I had cool ideas for how I wanted to “produce” it. The atmospheric lead guitar flourishes in the verses, the intentional soft and loud parts i emphasize more, the new chord changes/melodic “solo” part in the bridge/outro and the decision to put a yelled / spoken word part rather than another singing part there so it doesn’t distract from the guitar, the use of guitar noise, the way I sing the song now, all of that drastically changed the song’s vibe.

It took time today and yesterday to figure out final melodies cause I was still unsure of how I wanted things to be sung, I did like 20+ takes of each verse and narrowed down to the ones that did a melody I like lol. A lot of the final melodies went chiller / lower than I used to sing the song live, and some of the higher ones became harmonies, which I think was great for giving the song a role on the album’s flow - to actually have some of the more chilled out verses on the album and not just be hard hitting the whole time.

It was also hard because I was going for a specific Thurston Moore / Kyle Durfey style baritone delivery with my vocals, so even when I got the melody right then it was like “sound confident but don’t push or project too many notes, let them kinda fall out of your mouth a little bit and be a little breathy at times, but then don’t be flat as a result, compensate for that so you can still be clean about pitch.” It was nice to challenge myself to sing differently for a change - I’m so used to projecting every note when I sing in my lower range cause that’s often the only way for those parts to be heard in smaller / cheaper music venues & DIY spaces & in practice spaces with my band, but in the studio you have so much more headroom & space in the mix to play with softer and smoother vocals.

Then the yelled spoken word part I wanted to put a staticy tinny phone effect on it, and the hard part was not only getting through the whole thing without my voice giving out (toward the end of the session) but then we had to adjust the timing so that certain words match up with the guitar and drum hits. I also did a lot of using my voice as an instrument in the ambient / noisy parts of the song and that took time to mix it in a subtle way.

I gotta say I did save the song & im happy with the production job I did on it, the layers really make it count.

 

San Antonio I think? Probably not many, they like to stop in Dallas or Houston often

Bummer. He can be really good but he’s lost on the depth chart here. Hope it works out with Salah.
