it isn’t copying first take to say caleb hasn’t been very good so far lol it’s watching bears games (on me for sure) and using eyeballs

I think context is important in calling a pick a bust or not but that really means all the context too

Like yes Caleb is a #1 pick and is not playing in the top 2-3 tiers of QB play

But the Bears also essentially traded Bryce Young for Caleb, picks, and players. Considering Caleb as a #1 pick also needs to be comparing Caleb to what Bryce has done so far and when you make that comparison...even with Bryce having his moments Caleb is clearly better and they came out of the transaction on top. The Bears drafted him using the Panthers checkbook

But really it is the end of week 2, we are a long way from end of year superlatives (and for what it's worth I'm speaking in the context of calling the pick a bust or not, calling the PLAYER a bust I'm more on the same page as Josh: it's gotta be someone like Jamarcus Russell)

Caleb had one of the biggest dumpster fire coaching staffs in his first year, there’s been some truly damning stuff that came out from that regime. Ben Johnson’s offenses also aren’t simple. It’ll take time, but I already think he’s looked way better than last year and will improve.

Gonna be a broken record and say that it's wild that there are people out there who gave Trey Lance more chances than Caleb Williams and Trevor Lawrence alike to "prove he's not a bust"

I would put Caleb somewhere between bust and goat

I feel like a lot of the narrative (maybe lazy? maybe something?) is Caleb’s personality/maturity and that whole thing.
(Not the crying/nails you see on FB memes from your uncle)

He’s clearly got insane talent and has been paired with probably the exact type of coach he needs to manage whatever people think his issues are.

Looked up and down (mostly down) through 2 weeks but I think Ben Johnson is 70000x better than what he had last year. That offensive line is horrendous and for young QB’s that speeds up a really already sped up process, which we’ve seen.

I think Caleb and McCarthy will eventually be fine, but it’s been a rough start to the year/career for both

You're right that it's a big factor and a lightning rod for these kind of conversations that Caleb's maturity is (at least projected like) what it is, it's a good point

This is a thing that bugs me.

I thought he was a scary prospect coming out, and I don’t feel great about his development. But to be skeptical of Caleb sadly too closely aligns me with absolute fucking weirdos who care about the fingernails things and now I have to root for him because I want those losers mad.

  23. You hear Brady talk about this all the time but colleges aren’t developing QBs and the NFL isn’t developing QBs.

I've been interested in following Caleb's career (and Rattler's for that matter) because of the fact that they're the first 2 real Riley QBs. He's been touted as a QB whisperer when, before those 2, he brought in QBs with experience elsewhere (Texas Tech, TAMU, Alabama for Baker, Kyler, and Hurts respectively) and I've really wanted to see what his actual development of QBs is like which leads to those 2

Rattler was nothing special (miss me with the Heisman hype he had he was not good, eye test did not lie) and Caleb was phenomenal albeit while being the top HS QB (but he pretty much ascended to great immediately which is a hard jump to make) which, together, still has me think of Riley as more of a QB friendly guy than an actual QB whisperer but it also makes me SO excited to see how Caleb does developing with Ben Johnson
