Biking and the infrastructure for it is a very complex issue in America because we've largely decided to say fuck it when it comes to planning and funding an adequate system, and it's uniquely American as far as I know. We went full speed on developing car infrastructure and nothing else (including public transit) in most cities/towns and we're now trying to retrofit the solutions. I also don't think anyone in this thread actually wants to run down bikers for real lol

Joking like that is still very fucked up though and you can at least understand how when I didn’t have a car and only had a bike, I felt incensed by those comments. Like great my friends think about me getting hit by a car.

I get that everyone’s had incident(s) where a bike didn’t see you coming and you couldn’t see them and you had to slam on your breaks. It IS stressful - no one wants to risk a manslaughter charge - I do fully understand that side of the argument. Yes a lot of cyclists are blatantly unsafe and don’t even check for traffic coming and make sudden moves without anyone being able to predict. I could’ve done a better job acknowledging that that’s a real thing.

what makes me adamant is that America is backward about this because having such car centric infrastructure by default gives us very car centric views that are insane to the rest of the world, who is actually trying to make more space for biking to be a safe option for the masses and adapt to vehicles’ impact on climate change lol. To them, everyone in this country who talks about how they hate bikes when they’re in cars way is being absolutely ridiculous and not seeing the big picture, even though that is the normalized, standard view held here by both republican and democrat registered voters

Looking more likely I am going to get this. Excited by the bonus, shift (night owl), and ability to literally walk to work, but I'll admit the gross parts of the job still make me nervous (wiping butt, helping people shower, ect).

My mom did work like that in assisted living facilities for years and she assured me I will be fine, just requires a lot of patience.
