watching legette drop five passes and hubbard get like 40 yards off 150 carries against a dogshit jags defense broke all my optimism. fuck this.

 

Going to reiterate that the Jags defense isn’t dogshit. I know people don’t agree and aren’t going to be convinced if I post 3 paragraphs about it, but if anything that’s the most underrated part of the team - and how poorly they underperformed last year is exactly the reason why no one calls as much man to man as Nielsen did. Scheme issue, not a talent issue.

 

Someone told me that football was played over the weekend, but none of the teams I watched/rooted for seemed to be doing that

 

It was my take before the 2024 season to Matt that “nah, Nielsen can’t possibly be calling man to man as much as you’re suggesting, even the man-heavy teams barely eclipse 50%. If you literally do it 70% of the time your defense would be way too predictable, it would be asking unrealistic demands of linebackers / safeties, and OC’s would know how to fuck with you to convert easy 3rd downs and gas your defense until they’re too tired to be effective”.

turns out we both were right. He did call it 70% of the time… and everything I was concerned about did happen to our defense lol.

It was legit a domino effect too. Press Taylor also tried too hard to establish the run and the short pass to make his offense “easy” for Trevor Lawrence, but that generally had the opposite effect - when teams know you’re not gonna hit them with a deep pass they are way better at defending the run and the short pass lol. It’s less field to cover, you can pin your ears back and run downhill rather than hesitating and looking over your shoulder, etc etc

So we kept having 3 and outs, then Nielsen would be more aggressive on defense to stop points and call more man and more blitzes, and Press would overcompensate and be like “no we have to eat more clock than we’ve been eating” so he’d stubbornly call more dinky ass plays and we’d have another 3 and out, and now our defense is tired and predictable and giving up plays left and right… and NOW when we’re down 17 points and everyone knows we have to pass the ball further downfield, NOW we do it and Trevor gets blitzed to oblivion.

it was like a pendulum of bad coaches over correcting in response to other bad coaching lmao. Instead of either side just like, calling a gameplan with balance so we never got too predictable. I could write a whole long form editorial about how the 2024 Jags were a decent roster that got absolutely ruined by dumb egotistical coaches, how deflecting responsibility as a head coach is a huge red flag and why it got Doug fired twice… and how sticking to a script is an easy way to get caught playing checkers while your opponent plays chess.
