Like sure Radiohead fans are weird about them, non Radiohead fans acting like they’re some avant garde band with 0 accessible material is way more off base and pretentious though than acknowledging they were one of the pinnacle rock bands of their era from 1995-2010.

and then you started making false dichotomies between innovation and songwriting like it’s a sliding scale and they’re not separate things that you can do both

and look I’m sorry that’s just an annoying argument to me lol, if Radiohead was so focused on innovation that they sucked at traditional songwriting and hooks they wouldnt have sold 30 million albums. Changing styles and blending styles and adding innovation has nothing to do with the fact that like at least a good 60% of Radioheads songs (and almost all their popular songs) do have really strong hooks on top of that context

 

The meandering, ambient / atmospheric songs with the weird effects on the vocals and trippy sampled percussion etc are a part of their discography for sure - but it’s far less of their mateiral than non Radiohead fans act like it is. Like if you hate Pulk Pull or Treefingers so much skip that song cause the next song is catchy as shit lol

 

The BformyV show is The Poison anniversary tour so I only have to listen to the one album but I gotta say this is full of bangers im already overly familiar with from attending too many emo nights as an adult.

I just understand these arguments about Radiohead more if they released more albums like Kid A but that one’s really an outlier, they went straight back to making mostly catchy music after that lol

I appreciate that Dave doesn’t reach for criticisms that aren’t even true and simply says “I haven’t heard a Radiohead song that made me want to hear more”. I respect thinking they suck for a subjective reason, but when people try to put on an objective hat and talk about how their innovation hampers their accessibility or whatever, I’m just like rolling my eyes, not liking something yourself doesn’t mean it doesn’t have widespread appeal, and they genuinely would not be this popular if they were just regularly totally alienating the average listener. Innovation / evolution in music is a good thing (even though staying the same isn’t a bad thing) and we don’t have to try make a straw man that says otherwise just because we don’t like the directions RH went with it
