I’ve listened to all of their albums and i don’t hate it it just kinda feels like they’re going through the motions at this point. This one isn’t doing anything the last four albums haven’t also done

 

I have never listened to a Deftones album that I know of.

I was at a rockin’ pole show earlier this year and one of the dancers did a routine to knife party and now I love deaftones

This one feels especially samey too, almost all mid tempo songs and only like two that feel heavy at all. I know the band loves shoegaze but there are better shoegaze bands out there. The thing they used to be great is mixing the heaviness with shoegaze but they slid the sliders too far in one direction

 

some people (a lot of people, actually) are not looking for their favorite bands to divert from the sound they like. more people than not love that a band puts out the same album every 3 years.

 

I can see where you're coming from on this. I'll admit after Diamond Eyes I didn't really listen to them until Ohms so I didn't feel burnt out on the sound. I've always gravitated towards their type of sound anyways so I'm an easy target haha

 

I’m not saying it’s a bad album just surprised at how many people have been saying it’s their AOTY haha

I put it at 3 for my AOTY list but I think that's switching because the Dying Wish album has gotten a lot of spin since I initially made that grid.

 

At this point my 30 for the chorus dot fm algorithm is set and just waiting on things releasing between now and the due date to see if anything else goes in

That’s part of what has soured me on them too. 9 string guitar to play open chords? Why man. It just feels like it’s gotten gimmicky

 

gotta feel it's a bit of age influencing that too. they all seem to have softened a lot, and I know Stephen made a bunch of lifestyle changes because of his health. Just spitballing. Obviously Chino does a lot of Crosses stuff too and that's found it's way into their sound, especially because he apparently had to take on a lot of guitar writing duties due to Stephen's diabetes during the recording.

 

I’d go to one of those Philly wonder years dates but the TLA sucks

I still like to doodledoodle on high strings and chuggachugga on low strings, I'm ethical I use the whole guitar
