I mean if it was really about money and leisure they wouldn’t be head coaches lmao they work 16+ hour days. I would imagine a head coach of an NFL team is so passionate about trying to win and develop relationships with players that the money doesn’t even enter their brain in that discussion.

Which in itself is a privilege, to get fired and not even be worried about money lol.

On the other hand you have to do a lot of not earning money to even get to that point

Yeah very true. When @Night Channels told us what his life is like as a high school coach / coaching intern at a SMALL college that was enough for me to be like “…nah music is definitely a way more fun pipe dream / side hustle to try to get somewhere with” lol

Which also likely means privilege because it usually means you were able to live a life where you didn't have to earn that money and could make it work

Sometimes that implies struggle and I'd never discredit that struggle, often it implies a good support system to help you get there if you do it long enough to coach in the NFL

Like coaching or scouting in the NFL is something I would love to BE if I could just close my eyes and wake up in an alternate reality, but it is not something I would enjoy the work of BECOMING lol… that shit is a fuckin grind and you might never get past high school / non competitive colleges after putting in years of countless hours of film study when you should’ve been sleeping

its weird because i truly believe NFL head coaches are living their absolute dreams but there is no way they can be happy people.

I learned when trying to write film study articles that, while watching NFL game tape and learning about teams is fun for me, that’s only cause I can turn it off and do something else when I get tired of it lol.

HAVING to do hours of film study to meet a deadline, even if it’s exciting and interesting for the first hour or two… by that third hour you need a couple energy drinks cause your brain gets drained and you get real tired from the low stimulation and repetition.

And coaches will be doing this for hours like every evening during the season until 2 AM, despite coaching players and having meetings and drawing game plans all fucking day, and then will have to be up at 5:20 the next morning and be at the practice field before any of the players again. Crazy schedule.

i think there are a select few people who truly live eat sleep shit fuck and piss the game of football, and sean mcvay is definitely one of those people.

I think being a college coach would be more tiring than NFL imo. Even during the offseason you're just out there recruiting and spending most your time at work.

There’s a documentary out there of what Andy Reid’s life is like. That man is normal retirement age, and he still sleeps 3-4 hours a night and mostly shoves fast food in his face between coach responsibilities. How the fuck are coaches even alive lmao

    oh 1,000%

i also think its much more mentally tolling, especially if youre a big market/big school coach. i dont think any one person loves the NFL more than people who LOVE college football.

I agree with that. I think being a HC for either is a very hard job. Personally I just think about how hard of a job it's gotta be to be like, the graduate assistant and TE coach for the Dubuque Spartans and make barely enough for rent just to even get a chance to get a better position. Eventually you can get those college/NFL paychecks for being a FBS or NFL HC and it's going to be hard as hell work, but getting there seems like hell

NFL coaches do this too. They’re involved in every offseason discussion with scouts and personnel. They travel to see players they’re high on. They interview and hire new support coaches and shit. They study what went wrong in last years gameplan revisiting all the film in a more painstaking and slow way than they had time to during the season when it’s always “onto next week” immediately after Monday… and adjust things throughout their playbook, down to like, “this route needs 1.5 yards less depth and should make a shallower cut so the safety isn’t on top of them the second they shed the corner when we call this against cover 3”. Or, “I’ve gotta only call this play when my QB is in a groove cause he makes this specific mistake too often when we’re on our heels and facing pass rush or clock management constraints”. Then rookie camp and training camp happens and you gotta get all the players in shape and on their fundamentals again etc. Coaches might have like, the month of January (if they didn’t make the playoffs) and the month of May to chill maybe. The rest of the offseason they work 10-12 hour days and during the season they work so long it cuts into their sleep even though they aren’t doing anything else lol

Well I wasnt saying NFL coaches dont do anything during the offseason but they probably spend more time closer to home than a college coach who goes one day to Cali just to fly out to NY soon for another player.

I wouldnt want either HC job but it would be fun to do a job for a nfl/college team.

id rather be a baseball manager than a football HC. just get told what lineup to put out there by brian cashman and take all the blame when it falls apart and every now and then you get to scream you dick off at an umpire.

I love that his response to this showed that he did not take this as a compliment LMAO

I maybe am way off on this but I thought college teams tend to recruit more regionally than NFL teams because they have a higher chance of keeping that player loyal and committed to the program if they’re attending college close to home?
